Safe Mode

I have been trying to boot in to safe mode because XP has been hanging up towards the end of the boot process and I want to find what is causing it to do this. When I turn the machine on and hit the F8 key the only selection I have is xp - there are no other choices given. When I use msconfig and look at the boot.ini tab I notice that safe mode box is unchecked. Should I check that box to get a boot in safe mode.

    Hi,
    The boot.ini file is changed on your computer which is causing the windows to not load Safe Mode.Please perform the following steps...

    This is the contents of my boot.ini:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=3
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

    Unless you are running SCSI or have a dualboot system your boot.ini should look like mine. What has happened is that you with msconfig have added /SAFEBOOT to the last line in boot.ini.

    Try boot on your WinXP CD and load the Recovery Console. Using the Recovery Console you can repair your boot.ini using bootcfg.

    How to get access to the recovery console read this page from the header Method:

    http://www.geocities.com/kilian0072002/recconsole1.html

    On the Recovery Console prompt, type BOOTCFG /REBUILD and press Enter. (Note: There is a space between the BOOTCFG & /REBUILD).  It would start rebuilding the boot.ini file. Once done, please remove the windows xp cd and restart the system to check if you are able to load windows xp in safe mode.

    Regards,

    Sriram.

    I am a little concerned as I read some place you shouldn't fool with the boot ini unless you have a technican walking you through it. My problem may have occurred when I unchecked some programs that were loading on the startmenu. I try to catch programs before they put themselves on the start menu but some of them never asked. Anyway, after I rebooted I got a system configuration notice that I should do something and since I wasn't sure what it was talking about I just closed it without doing anything. I wanted my changes to stay. I thought it was telling me XP would go back to its original state.

    sriramb13,
    The only difference between your boot.ini and mine is that your timeout =3 and mine =30. Otherwise except for the fact you are running xp professional and I have home, everything is the same.
