Don't know cause , but you could check HKEY by clicking the "Start" button > RUN > & type regedit then press "Enter" key to open Registry Editor , then click "Edit" > "Find..." > & type scrnsave then click "Find Next" this should find & show the Name "SCRNSAVE.EXE" check the values shown. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop then scroll to "Screen......." should show ScreenSaveActive 1 ScreenSaveIsSecure 0 ScreenSaveTimeout (value in seconds) SCRNSAVE.EXE (the location of chosen Screen Saver)
See if changing the Screen Saver settings change the different Timeout values & other values. Should only change the Timeout values.
You could try running SFC , which checks protected System Files for corruption & if found replaces them from reinstall..XP CD . If it prompts for XP CD , hold Shift key while inserting XP CD to stop Auto play. Use Start > Run & type sfc /scannow (space after sfc) ------------- You could also try a Windows Repair (not R for Recovery Console) from boot of XP CD. ------------ If the above doesn't fix problem you might have to wait until you next re-install XP OS from boot of XP CD.
In the mean time if you want to start a Screen Saver manually use Search , Advanced (1st 3 boxes ticked) for *.scr Right click on the appropriate file & select Create Shortcut (on Desktop). Then when you want to start Screen Saver just double click on Desktop shortcut.
If you double click on the .scr files found by Search they will display Screen Saver to test.
