I have a Dimension 2400. When I turn on my pc, starting up seems pretty slow. I clicked RUN; typed in MSCONFIG then clicked STARTUP and noticed that everything is checked. I think I can make starting up faster by unchecking a lot of the programs that I don't use--there are about 26 items in total. Problem is I don't know what all those items are, so I'm afraid to uncheck them. Another possibility is that I don't have enough RAM. The 2400 only came with 128 mgb; I added 256.
You can uncheck anything related to Adobe, Acrobat, Sonic, DVDLauncher, QuickTime, RealAudio, Java. They'll still be available to run when you want them, but they won't start every time you boot the PC.
Just don't uncheck anything related to your antiviral (like Norton, McAfee, etc.), firewall, video card, mouse.
yea, but i did that once, and your printer won't work untill you put it back to normal with all drives running. but other than that, it starts and shutsdown real fast. hope you like it.
Thanks, guys. My problem is I can't figure out what most of those programs are--although some are obvious. I'm wondering which ones are absolutely necessary to leave checked. Otherwise, I guess it's a trial and error thing that's very time consuming and hoping I don't mess it up. In the past, I had Windows ME and was told which programs NOT to uncheck in the startup. Now, with Windows XP it looks completely different.
Entries in "Command" column on Startup tab in msconfig will help you figure out what's what. Don't turn off anything in a folder with any of these in the folder name:
\intel
\mcafee or \norton, depending on which antiviral you use
\system32
\logitech
\ZA or \zonealarm, if you use that software
You can turn off:
sgtray, Sonic's pesky updater for CD burning software
qttask, Quicktime player
DVDlauncher
mmtask, Musicmatch player
msmsgs, windows messenger
realplay, Real Player
jusched, java updater
acrobat assistant, adobe pdf reader
DO NOT turn off anything on the Services tab in msconfig. You could prevent the PC from booting ever again and force a reinstallation of XP.
Thanks for the kind offer. I've unchecked over half of the stuff and it seems to be better. To tell you the truth, I don't know how to copy & paste the list from the Startup and I'm not up to typing them all out right now. Also, I've got another issue (with my Outlook Express) that I'm going to post now that I've found this board.
