New RW CDs and DVDs are being treated like R only in my RW drive. After formatting CDs and DVDs and transferring files to them, I get a message that says something like, "Your current version of DLA does not support.....you will be able to read from this media, but you will not be able to add to or edit."
Previously made RW media DOES work properly.
I am using the Philips 8631 DVD RW drive.
I have installed the software and firmware updates recommended by Dell: R86783, R90275, and CD21.

Sue: I don't have DLA installed on anything right now so I am running on my faulty memory.
Using Windows Explorer select Properties for your burner. There should be a tab for DLA. Check the eject settings and make sure you have them set to leave open or use on this PC. (can't recall the exact text)
Make sure you have not formatted them with another packet writer like Drag to Disc or InCD. Also make sure you don't have another packet writer active on your PC. Only one can be active.
I don't see an option for "leave open" under properties settings, or anything like that.
I tried un-checking the "Enable DLA on your drives" under the DLA tab. Supposedly this will allow the Windows default recording program to be availalbe, but I can't seem to find that. If I right-click on the drive in "My Computer" or click "File", I see no options available for formatting the media.

I'm still confused.

Sue: XP Burning is built, there is no program that is visible to the user. Under the Properties for the drive there is a Recording tab. In that tab there is a check box to "Enable CD recording on this drive".
Formatting is only used for packet writers, no other form of burning can use formatted media!
XP Burning is a Data CD (File System = CDFS) with Sessions. To use it you use Explorer and copy and paste the files to the burner's drive letter.
A balloon will pop up telling you that files are waiting to be burned. Click the balloon and insert blank media. Follow the Wizard.
To use the disc again, just follow the above only insert the partial disc.
With XP Burning you can Add, Overwrite but never delete files.
