Hi, I've got a wierd problem that is just not going away and it's driving me nutz. On startup my Inspiron 4150 with Windows XP Home SP2 loads into windows then my HD goes nutz and slows everything down for about 5 min until a program in Task Manager shows up as update.exe and I end it, then everything is fine. There are no other running processes taking up CPU at the first 5 min and then update.exe comes on and I kill it and everything miraculously works again. This kinda all started when my SP2 automatic updates kept trying to download SP 2 Canidate 2 and I kept stopping it is when this started. Finally I let it install Canidate 2 thinking that would solve my problem but it didn't. I have all the updates installed and it still is doing this. I've tried turning off automatic updates and that doesn't work either. I have used the problem solving steps with msconfig and nothing in there would stop it. I can't hardly use this thing until that update.exe comes up and I end it. I have also let it do it's thing until update.exe dissapears and it's fine until I restart then the whole process starts over again. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
It sounds like you have the Beta Software Blues. RC2 of WinXP SP-2 is unsupported (as was RC1), untested (at least to Microsoft's satisfaction, which is why it's still a beta product), and prone to any one of a number of odd glitches. I certainly wouldn't attempt to fathom why a beta version was making a system act weird, nor do I recommend that anyone other than the developers try to do so. The best advice I can offer is to not install beta software unless you're prepared to live with the results. If you're not, uninstall it, and hope that you're able to revert to a configuration that works.
I have turned off the automatic updates in there and the security center with no luck... I did however try the last time I booted up by disabling the service in administrative tools and it didn't do it when it loaded so we'll see the next time I boot if it continues or not. I do get the annoying balloon in the bottom right corner when automatic updates are disabled which will turn them back on if you click on it so I have to wait for the balloon to dissapear because if I click it I bet my problem will be back. I do realize that having SP2 has it's share of bugs and I do share my expirences with Microsoft so asking a question here in the forum and finding solutions here does help the debugging process.
Control Panel and go into Administrative Tools. Double Click on Services and Right Click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service then left click on Properties and change the startup type to disabled and click apply. Then reboot your computer.
