I keep getting update errors on 3/4 of the NIS program. Installed new live update file. Called Dell tech had them walk me through uninstall and reinstall via instructions on Symantec website.
Symantec auto fix from the Symantec Website feature also reports errors on this program. Sent them support request questions on 4/14 and again today. Nothing back except auto response.
Question 1: Will uninstall of this poor Symantec "no support" product invalidate my Dell warranty in any way?
I have disk from Microsoft and Computer Associates to install the CA EZtrust AV and their Software firewall . Is it ok to install these instead.
Question 2 Why does Dell even offer the Symantec product if Symantec support from the Symantec company does not work or appear to even exist? This does not reflect well on the Dell company.
Luckliy I like the rest of my Dell computer and have done enough research to realize the issue is with the Symantec Corporation and not Dell but I wonder how many folks are Blaming Dell for the bad Symantec issues?
Right after log in to admin account did the change and next thing I know autolive update took off and started workin and it did all the needed things no problem.
Gosh, I just can't wait till xp sp2 comes out if my programs don't work with the current ms FW just think what may get broken with the new one they indicate is coming out? giggle
Thanks again just hope the NIS protects as well as the zone alarm fw I am used to using that one
First, I have NIS 2004 (retail version) installed on one of my XP machines and it's working without problems. Have you tried uninstalling it, restarting Windows XP and then reinstalling it. Also, make sure the Windows firewall is disabled, if you have both the Windows and Norton fiewalls running there can be conflicts and problems.
Second, in most cases, OEM versions of software such as the Norton are supported by the PC Vendor (In this case, Dell) rather than the vendor, in this case Norton. Norton will provide updates but Dell is the one that is supposed to support it. However, in many cases Dell only supports software products for the first 30 days (there are exceptions like the OEM Windows which they support for the length of the warranty).
I will agree that Norton's support is worse than Dell's and theirs is "off shore" too and apparently in the same country as Dell's "off shore" support.
You are under no obligation to use Norton. If you have some other product you want to use, just uninstall the Norton and install whatever you want. Same way with the other Dell provided programs such as Sonic Record Now, if you have a favorite CD burning program and it is XP compatible and supports the drives you have you are free to use that instead.

Wow, do you know how many phone calls I have made to Dell and no one mentioned about the MS FW. I should have thought of that but as usual I never even considered it.
Thanks will give it a try. If it works ok then I will keep the NIS on until 90 days up just to learn how to use it cause something tells me my friends may show up at my door with their broken puters and one of them may have the program on it.
Lately, the doorbell and phone has been ringing off the hook because of Spyware killing their machines and they know I love to work on puters as a hobby.
