Two Window Vistas

I am in need of help.

I am currently using a Dell Inspiron 640m installed with Windors Vistas.

Whilst my Windows vistas downloaded some updates, it installed the same while i shut down my computer. After i restarted the computer a day later it insisted on shutting down and restarting so that it can configure the updates.

It did so and after a long period of inactivity, i decided that it might have hanged and proceeded to hold the power button to manually shut the computer off.

Upon restarting, it tried to configure the windows updates but after having reported to have completed the configuration, it attempted to restart. Upon restarting and the start up of windows vista, it proceeded to configure the same update all over again. It kept repeating without stopping.

That's problem number one.

Problem number two: In an attempt to get my computer working. I re-installed windows vista from the DVD's that was provided when i bought the laptop. After install everything. I came realise that now i have two windows vista on my computer and only one is capable of running.

My questions are:

How can i get my original windows vista working?

If i can get the original windows vista working, how can i get rid of the 2nd new one installed?

If i cannot get the original windows vista working, how can i get rid of the 1st original windows vista?

Am not really an IT experts so any help is greatly appreciated.....

    Welcome to Dell Forum

I think a good next step will be at this moment, to set computer back to factory settings, when Dell sent it to you. Is basically to reinstall Windows and all Dell's factory applications.

Just boot to the computer, and when you see the Dell Logo, start presing F8, you should get a Windows advanced boot options, select to Repair your computer, it will load the Recovery enviroment. It will ask you for the admin password, firs, change the user by yours and type your password (if you don't have a passwor, just leave blank) then you'll get Windows Advanced option (something like that) The last option should be Dell Factory Image Restore, click on that and follow instructions. (this may take some minutes, so be patient and do not turn computer off).

Now, if the Repair your computer option is not listed, you may deleted the partition, or it is not available by the second installation you did. There's a chance to try a second method that you can see here.

If you can see the files, no problem, just copy them to a CD, flash drive, or external HDD, reformat your computer back, and then copy from any device you choose, and paste them back into your computer.
