USB not working

Hi

I have a Dell latitude D610 w/ WinXp sp2.  Dont use it often but recently discovered that it does not recognize USB devices (external hard drive or thumb drive in particular).  When I plug usb device in - new hardware wizard launches and tries to install the driver (umssys is one of the drivers) however when it locatest he drivers and install, the next window in the wizard says that the hardware was not installed.  When I go to device manager there is a yellow exclamation indicating that device is not working however i cannot "update drive" here either.

Where can I locate the appropriate Dell USB drivers?

Thanks

Sherry

    sruddock,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Try reinstalling the chipset drivers. If you have recently reinstalled windows on this system you must install the drivers in the order listed below after installing Windows. If not, then just first try installing the chiset drivers.

Dell Latitude D610 Drivers Download Page

Driver install order for desktops and laptops

The following list is an overview of the correct order to install drivers on Dell desktops and portables. After reinstalling Microsoft® Windows®, follow the order listed when reinstalling drivers. It is recommended that you print this list for reference when installing drivers.

Note: Some devices may not function properly if the drivers are installed out of order.

    1.   Desktop System Software (DSS) or Notebook System Software (NSS) - A vital utility that provides critical updates and patches for the operating system. If you are reinstalling Windows or updating all drivers, it is important that this software be installed first. This is located under the System Utilities Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.

    2.   Chipset - Helps Windows control system board components and controllers. This is located under the Chipset Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.

    3.   Video Adapter - Enhances video performance. This is located under the Video Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.

    4.   Network Interface Card (NIC) - Enhances the network controller for Internet or network access. This is located under the Network Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.

    5.   Laptops Only: Dell Quickset or Dell Control Point Manager (DCP) - Controls power management, ambient light sensor, wireless profiles, and security features on laptops. This is located under the Applications on the Drivers and Downloads page.
    6.   Audio Adapter - Enables and enhances the audio controller. This is located under the Audio Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.

    7.   Modem - Allows dial-up capability. This is located under the Communication Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.

    8.   Wireless Network Card - Enables and enhances the wireless network controller. This is located under the Network Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.

    9.   Touchpad, Pointer, Trackstick, Mice, and Keyboards - Enhances the pointing device features. This is located under the Input Device Drivers Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.

    10.   Other Devices
    • Intel vProTM  or AMTTM  - Enhances system manageability. This is located under the Chipset Category on on the Drivers and Downloads page.
    • Bluetooth ®  Module located under the Network Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
    • Dell Wireless Mobile Broadband Cards located under the Communication Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
    • PCMCIA/Smartcard controller located under the Security Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.

Read this, too: A computer that is running Windows XP cannot detect a USB flash drive, an Apple iPod, or an external hard disk drive

Then click the Fix It button in the middle of the page and follow the instructions to let Microsoft fix it for you.

    Thanks for replying

Have not recently reinstalled windows ...orignal install still.  Can one of these (1 thru 10) be applied rather than installing all of them to reinstall USB drivers specifically?

    Scanned for malware lately?

You should try to reinstall #1 and #2 on Jesse's list, Laptop System Software and the Chipset, in that order, after booting in Safe Mode. Then reboot normally and see if that fixes the USB problem.

If not, open Device Manager and expand the list under USB. Right-click and uninstall all of the USB root hubs. Then reboot. Windows will reinstall the USB ports.

Just adding to one of the suggestions from RoHe

Quote “If not, open Device Manager and expand the list under USB. Right-click and uninstall all of the USB root hubs. Then reboot. Windows will reinstall the USB ports.”

If that doesn’t fix the problem, repeat the uninstall part, but rather than doing a hot reboot:

Shutdown Windows then (if using DC power adapter) switch off at mains socket, remove laptop battery & disconnect ALL USB devices

Replace battery after 15 to 30 minutes, only connect (if necessary) USB mouse, then power on & boot to Windows

    hi

looks like you have a problem with USB drivers

did your USB drives support this operating systems? if yes, have you ever installed the drivers for the device?

    for your information

if your going to use a new hardware first of all you need to install the drivers for the same then only it will detect. usually for the USB drivers before XP OS you need to install the driver.

"I would ever never though I would have such a problem with a dell computer."

Dell's are no less (or more) susceptible to hardware (or software) failures than ANY other brand out there.  A computer is still a computer and can experience computer problems regardless of what brand it is.

Well, it's not "rigged", if that's what you mean.  Murphy's Law, just plain "bad luck", or whatever else you want to call it :)
