USER ACCOUNTS

I have been using my computer under "Administrator" and had not set up any other user accounts because I was the only one using this computer.  I decided to set up user accounts for my family for when I come home over summer.  However, now the only accounts available at the login screen are the two that I recently created, and not my account (the administrator account)...  So now, i cannot login to my account, and so I no longer have my account, or any of the things I had on it.

Is there any way I can get this back, or make it to where the login screen has "Administrator" again, so I can login??

Thanks for your help in advance.

    Hi,
It sounds as if you have been using the main Admin Account which is normally hidden.  It is not a good idea to use this Account for security reasons.

Here is how to access it now
    If you have XP Pro
    At the Welcome Screen
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice( Hold CTRL+ALT and press DEL twice)

Here is how to make it appear without above
    Start/RUN    Type
    regedit
    OK
    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon \ SpecialAccounts \ UserList
Unhide the Administrator key by giving it a value of 1

Once you get into this Main Admin Account you should set up an ordinary Admin Account and copy all you data over to it. Then keep that Admin Account hidden at log on.

Here are MS instructions how to do it.  You may have already done the first part   i.e.  creating the new Account.

You must also transfer all your email settings to the new Account. There is a link on the page how to do that too.
Here is another tutorial on how to back up your email (Outlook and Outlook Express)

So you could have a go at that if you like and if you need any help just give us a shout.

I didn't see an administrator key.... here's what was at the above location:

    Default
    HelpAssistant
    IUSR_
    IWAM_
    NetShowServices
    SQLAgentCmdExec
    TsInternet User
    VUSR_

which, if ay of these is supposed to be the Administrator key??

    diamondsinthesky,

There is no Administrator key in your registry so you must create one. Here is the procedure:

    Start the Registry Editor
    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon \ SpecialAccounts \ UserList \

Right-click an empty space in the right pane and select New > DWORD Value

    Name the new value Administrator

Double-click this new value, and enter 1 as its Value data

    Close the registry editor

    My apologies.
I forgot that I had created that key so I missed the step out:smileysad:
