I have a dell 4300, running win XP home. I have been getting these messages that my virtual memory is low & that windows is attempting to upgrade the files or something, so I use my computer to go to web pages that I have bookmarked, after using my computer for a half hour or so, each time i try to log into these web pages, all I get is that the web page cannot be contacted.if i restart my computer then I can get the web pages to come in..........until the half hour passes & the problem starts again. Web pages that are not bookmarked will come in however.
It sounds like the operating system is controlling your virtual memory and is telling you that it's full and need to increase the virtual memory. During this time the system usually crawl. I found it better to set this manually.
Quick lesson
Your system has physical memory (128MB, 256MB, 512MB, etc) to store running program and when it runs out it uses your hard drive as a temporary storage also know as virtual memory.
If you want to set it manually here's how you do it.
To increase the size
1. click start menu > settings > control panel > double click on system (if you don't see system you might not be in classic view, to change to classic view you will need to click on "switch to classic view" top left corner)
2. click on
advanced tab > under
Performance click
Settings> click on
advanced tab > under
virtual memory click
change > Under
Custom Size: this is where you would set your virtual memory. I have mine set at 1500 initial and 3000 maximum. You will need to reboot once you've change this.

You also might want to buy more memory so your not always using the virtual memory. Using the virtual memory is more or less a backup when your primary memory gets filled. If your interested in increasing your memory I recommend Crucial.com. I've used them before and there cheap and have good service.
