vmm32.vxd error message
I prurchased dell dimension 8100 with windows me. I got a virus and had my hd replaced with a refurbished hd .. Later on, I upgraded my operating system to windows xp home edition and upgraded norton security to 2006.. before the problem started i watched my security go from green to red..and i immediatly pulled the plug in my internet connection but it was too late.
Now it seems to want to restart in windows me.
Fast forward to today.....
I try to restart my pc and I get the following error msg.....:
Windows is bypassing your start up files.
The following is missing or corrupted C:\windows\IFSHLP.sys
WININIT.EXE: missing\unable to load
Press any key to continue...
the following file is missing or corrupted: C:\windows\system\VMM32.VXD
Type the name of the windows loader(e.g., C:\windows\system\vmm32.vdx)

Ok. Insert your Windows XP CD. Restart computer. Press F12 while Dell logo is on screen. Select CD ROM as boot device. Press Enter. If you get the message "Press any key to boot from CD", press any key. When Windows setup screen appears, press r to get into Recovery Console. Does Recovery Console see a Windows XP installation? If so, select it (usually 1), press Enter. Password is usually blank. Press Enter. Type chkdsk /r at command prompt. If you don't see a Windows XP installation and can't get to Recovery Console, you may be facing a reinstall of XP. If you have data you need to back up, you will have to boot to a DOS prompt with a Windows ME boot disk or CD and copy your data to floppies or other media that can be accessed from DOS.

- i inserted the xp cd..restarted pressed F12. pressed enter . i never got to the recovery console but my norton go back kicked in .... i started the repair problems and picked a restore point that was at least an hour before the problem started...think it'll work?
- I'm probably going to have to reinstall windows home edition xp but it will wipe out all my data!Could i save all of info to an external drive? probably going to buy one today..ok, i learned my lesson i probably should bought one way before this :smileywink:how do i restart to save all my data?

Yes. You can save all data to an external hard drive. Most new drives, internal and external, come with software that will allow you to clone your existing drive. Or you can set the external up as a storage drive and just copy you data to it. Probably, the best idea in your case. Would prevent Me from rearing its ugly head again. If you do a clean install of Windows, it will destroy all data on your existing drive.

still tryin to instyall softweare for new drive so i can copy it lol. wont even let me copy it

If you do not know password for Windows installation, go here: http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bd050303.zip
Save the bd050303.zip file to your hard drive. Extract it using Winzip. Run the install.bat to create a bootable Linux floppy that can be used to blank NT/XP password(s). Boot the obstinate computer with the floppy. Follow on-screen instructions to blank the password. Restart. Boot to WinXP CD. You should be able to get to Recovery Console without a password.
