What is vssdll.exe?

Does anyone know what vssdll.exe does?  This tends to pop up on startup and its effect is to use up memory and cpu.  My virus check shows a clean system.  Thanks

Try to turn this off using msconfig (Start -> Run -> msconfig). I'm sure it's virus or other worm in your computer.

I did do a search on google using vssdll.exe and vssdli.exe and both searches returned no results.  Actually I am sure that the file name is vssdll.exe.  This has been a problem over the last week or so.  My response has been to bring up the task manager, click on processes, then cancel vssdll.exe.  It has a tendency to come back.  So far,  though, if I cancel the process and then restart the computer it's stops.  I will try the other file names you tried.  Thanks.

I did a search for vssdll.exe (are you sure that is what the file is?) and didn't find anything with google.  It would appear to be an invalid file as google will always find some type of info when you do a search for a file, even if it's spyware.

both vss.exe and vss.dll come back with valid file searches with google.

Do a search for this file on your computer. Make sure that include hidden files and system files in your search. When you find it, right click on the file and select Properties from the drop down menu. Look on all the tabs and see if can get a clue as to what it is and where it came from. The folder in which it resides may also give a clue as to where it came from.
