Windows 10 update causing pc to lock

I've had Windows 10 running on my Optiplex 3020 for a while now with no real problems. Recently an automated update is causing the pc to lock during the reboot. I get a black screen with circling dots which stays for hours without changing. I have to turn the pc on and off a few times to get it to recover to the previous version which works fine. I have run the Dell dignostics which updated a few drivers but the problem still occurs. Windows is trying to install the update every few days. Any ideas what might be causing this?

    dfmarshall,

It is hard to say what is causing the problem. If all your drivers are updated and the computer was running fine prior to the update then, there is something in the Microsoft Update causing problems. Unplug any devices connected to the computer and disable any anti-virus or utility programs. Once you have done that try the update. If that does not resolve the issue. Contact Microsoft about the update.
