Hi. I am looking to upgrade my Inspiron 1521 from Vista Home Basic (32-bit) to Windows 7 Professional (32-bit). I checked with Dell support and they said that my system meets the requirements for the upgrade. Here are some of my system specs: 4GB of RAM and an AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor. However, I am worried about my hard drive size.I am not sure how to find out the exact physical size of my hard drive, but in my computer, it shows 61.9GB on OS(C:) and 9.99GB on Recovery (D:). Of course this led me to assume that I had about a 72GB hard drive, but I'm not even sure that that is a possibility, so maybe 80GB. Anyway, I have heard that the performance of Windows 7 may be lacking with a hard drive this size. Does it require a larger hard drive than Vista would? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.
No, a small hard drive will not affect the perforance or how well Windows 7 runs. You need a minimum of 16GB for the install. In practical terms, you will need a drive at least 60GB in size - for future growth - if you are careful with what is stored/installed on the drive. Your drive is an 80GB drive - around 74GB of that will be usable by Windows - and should be plenty large to run Windows ... again, as long as you are catious about what is put on it.
Thanks so much for the quick reply. That's what I expected to hear - i figured that I wouldn't have to do anything differently, since I have always had that hard drive and have been running Vista with it. I think I'm going to go ahead and do a clean install with the upgrade disk.
