Windows cannot find 'copy'.

When starting up in Windows XP, I get the following message:

Windows cannot find 'copy'.  Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start Button, and then click Search.

Again, this happens at startup and is not preceded by my attempt to copy anything.  In fact, I can successfully copy files and this startup message is the only sign of trouble; however, I would like to eliminate the message and any possible bad side effects.

Thanks very much.

Check your Startup folder on the Start Menu.  It sounds like something with this file name may have been shortcutted there.  If nothing there, run msconfig (winkey "r" then type msconfig - [enter] ).  Go to the startup tab and look for anything that is checked here that relates to "copy".  Another posibility is a program install and some feature that wants to load or a trojan horse/ virus that wants to or is loading at startup.

Thanks very much, joat77, for an accurate and speedy assessment.  I had some extraneous stuff in the Start folder and when I removed it, the problem apparently disappeared.

Very interesting indeed. I got the same problem about one week ago after making more than one new installation of programs on about the same day. I'll list them below and it would be very interesting whether you have any of those installed.

I have a clean startup folder and a clean system (no viruses according to NAV), also, msconfig startup looks ok. The problem occurs only occassionally, perhaps only every 5th to the 10th time upon startup. Very odd!! I've also check the event viewer (both system and applications) and nothing is listed pertaining to this error. Thus, I really don't know what can cause this, except a bug in one of the following programs that I installed (lasted version for all on a WXP Prof. machine):

    1. Easy CD Creator 6 premium from ROXIO (with updates from Oct. 29, 2003); in fact I suspect this program strongly since ROXIO hasn't impressed me in the past ... but I may be wrong on this. I tried once to use the repair on this program and it repaired it successfully, in fact, it probably just installed the programs again. No complaints. But the "copy" problem is still there.

    2. iTunes (from Apple); there is an event listed in the application event viewer (information only) which is not related to the above.

    3. PowerDVD 5;

    4. MS critical update for IE6 SP1: KB824145

I would appreciate if you have any of the 3 applications or the Microsoft update installed. I noticed the problem after made those 4 installs. Lesson learn (or reminded): don't do too many updates without checking for a healthy system between updates.

Does anyone else have the same problem??

    Regards, Roger.

I also started having the same problem in the last few days.  The only things I have downloaded are the most recent NAV definations and the last two windows updates 828035 824145.  Like you say not every start up but every 5 or so.  Something changed with one of those downloads.

Further to my last reply, I should have added for dejus that I have PowerDVD (4.0, I think) although I haven't used it in ages.  I don't appear to have iTunes.

Does anyone know if anything bad happens in deinstalling Easy CD Creator, if in fact that is the problem.  Presumably Windows Media Player has all the basic functionality to run the CD drive?

Hi again, thanks for picking up on this ... the error might be harmless, but it's certainly an error and should be addressed and fixed. Some additional comments:

    A. I'm not surprised you thought you had it fixed ... so did I after doing the Norton Windows scan and fixing the registry etc. No. The copy error still occurs.

    B. I believe you don't have the newest version of Easy CD Creator (6 premium) so that then shouldn't be the problem. (I was using the version 5 premium earlier for many months and did not have a problem.) Yes, I have entries in msconfig startup related to ROXIO (directCD -> now called something else ... drag-to-disc ... and Audiocentral something and perhaps something more) but since you don't use this version of Eeasy CD Creator, again, it shouldn't be a problem.

    C. I obviously have and use the Norton Antivirus program (NAV) and it's typically up to date (do the manual updates but quite often to keep it up to date). It can be the problem but in the past I never had a problem with NAV for the past 2 years since I started to use it.

    D. I'm glad to hear that you DON'T have the two latest updates from MS. (I have both installed, but I noticed the error after

the 824145 was installed.) I must say though, that I'm usually up to date with the MS critical updates, and I've never had any problems with those.

    E. I don't have ZoneAlarm installed.

    E. At this point, it leaves me with nothing that I can pinpoint, I exclude Easy CD Creator, the MS updates. Possibly iTunes or PowerDVD 5. You didn't comment on those but I believe you don't have those installed. Do you? Or possibly NAV itself ...?

Ideas and help from anyone is apprecited.

    Cheers, Roger.

In fact, my problem isn't gone afterall and it too happens once in every 5 or 10  startups.

msconfig startup has navapw32, realsched, opware32, ccRegVfy, ccApp, DirectCD, msmsgs, ctfmon, Digital Line Detect, ZoneAlarm.

I have not yet installed XP updates 824145 or 828035 so I think we can eliminate those as the source.  I was beginning to think it was RealPlayerOne (realsched in msconfig) because it has caused me problems on earlier machines but presumably you folks don't have it in msconfig.  The DirectCD in msconfig refers to Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 and I note that this software involves dragging and dropping files using Windows Explorer.  Be interesting to know if okarl has Roxio in msconfig startup too.

I upgraded to Power DVD 5, no problems.

For EsayCD Creator 5, if it is the basic version that came as OEM, there is an update to version 5.3.5.10.

    http://www.roxio.com/en/support/ecdc/ecdc_basic.jhtml

No problems here with either of the two MS updates (XP home). Some threads report problems with XP pro, but to do with scrolling, not the error message of his thread.

Has anything reappeared in msconfig startup list when the error recurs?

Thanks. We can eliminate the 828035 as I am almost certain that I saw the problem before I made that update. I saw it after the 824145 was installed and NAV was updated (and installation of application programs that I listed earlier).

If the previous post by johnb is correct, namely, he doesn't have any of those MS updates installed, then ... what to suspect ... only NAV left. Or there is a virus. But I've scanned the system more than once recently (with NAV with latest virus definitions) and it detects none.

Please keep us updated on what you'll find.

    Regards, Roger.
