Windows Explorer.exe won't stop

I'm using a Dell Dimension with original XP Operating System, SP2. When I go to turn off the computer, I USUALLY (not always) get a window telling me that explorer.exe is not responding. If I click the End Now button, explorer stops, and everything is fine. If I wait until the box times out, the computer hangs up and will not end explorer.exe or finish turning off. Why is explorer.exe sticking?

I've run Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot, Xoftspy subscription, and WebRoot SpySweeper. The system is as clean as I can get it. Also have Symantec for viruses. It's been doing this since I bought the machine several years ago.

Could be spyware . . have you run some anti-spyware tools such as AdAware, SpyBot and/or the new Windows Defender?

This can take some time, but you can pin down the culpirt by going to Start . . Run . . Type msconfig . . click on the Startup tab . . click the disable all at the bottom and reboot . . if that stops the hang, go back and enable the programs one at a time, restarting between each enabling untill the little rascal shows up again.

And be sure to disconnect from the internet while you are doing all this . . your protection will be disabled for a while.

....and when the error comes up, click on the 'Click Here' button, and check out the Mod Name. That will give you a fair idea of which program is causing that, lest it's an 'Unknown' module.

OK, I'll give the msconfig idea a try. Last time I used msconfig on my computer at work, I locked myself out and had to call IT techs to get me started again. The only difficulty I can see is that explorer.exe doesn't get stuck every time... however, it's not a hard project to try, just a little tedious. I'll let y'all know next week how it worked.
