Windows Firewall/Group Policy

I'm having a problem with my home network. I have a wired PC with a printer attached. The PC is getting the internet through a cable modem. We also have a wireless router attached to the modem and the home computer and the wireless signals go to a laptop. On the PC, I can get the laptops shared files. But when I try to access the PC's shared files from the laptop, it says access is denied. I cannot figure out how to grant permission for it to access files and printers.

I was looking at my Windows firewall protection and it says that it is off but some aspects are being controlled by Group Policy. When I go under exceptions, file and printer sharing is listed as a "No" under Group Policy so I was thinking maybe this was the reason. But I can't figure out how to change this since it's not allowing me to turn my firewall back on (the options are grayed out) or change the options on Group Policy. I'm trying to look up how to get to Group Policy but my help and support says it's not available on my version of Windows (which is Windows XP Home Edition).

Does anyone know what I can do?

    Stefarooalg,
Not clear on your wiring.  Should be cable to cable modem, cable modem to wireless router, wireless router to each PC via cable or wireless.  All PCs should have file sharing enabled for their LAN connections.  All should be members of the same workgroup.  You may need to rerun your Internet Connection Wizard and verify that all are configured to connect to the Internet directly.

On any computer running Windows XP with SP1, disable the Windows XP firewall. It will not allow File and Printer Sharing. On computers running Windows XP with SP2, make sure that the Windows XP firewall has File and Printer Sharing checked off on the Exceptions tab. If you are running any third party firewalls, like those provided by such programs as Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, or McAfee Security Suite, make sure they are configured to allow local network traffic.

Check to see if there is a third party programm running such as Norton.

It appears everything is set up the way it should be. And like I said I can get the laptop files on the PC but when I go to get the PC's files on the laptop the error I get is that there is a Logon error. It says to contact the system administrator (me) so I can grant permission for the laptop. Is there a specific way I can do that?

Did you install Mcaffee or did it come installed?  If from the factory, I'll bet there is a hidden setting in there.

I have McAfee but not any firewall protection. It just says on my Security Center that my Windows Firewall is enabled...which I'm not sure is true.

I don't have anything like Norton or ZoneAlarm on my PC computer. And as far as I can tell I don't have anything else that would be putting up firewall protection.

Is it possible that protection on the laptop would stop it from accessing another computer's files?

Did you check for  a third party firewall?  That is typically the erro message you will see.

It did come with the computer and then expired for a while and then I downloaded a new version myself. Do you have any idea were the hidden setting could be? I'll see if I can get some information from McAfeem, too. By the way, thanks for your help so far.

Run gpedit.msc, and see if that was changed in there. GPO usually does not apply to computers that are not part of the domain. I am not sure why you are having this issue. Maybe someone has edited the local GP. You can also run rsop.msc from command prompt see if anything was changed in the GP.

    Good luck.

Okay, I went to services and stopped the firewall. I still couldn't share files. I turned it back on and I went back to the firewall box and it still has what I has before. The options are grayed out and across the top it says: "For your security, some settings are controlled by group policy."

Now, this is the exact message I get when I try to access my computer's files from the laptop:
"Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer."

Does any of this sound familiar?

Also, what did you mean by creating account? Also, how do you change a password or find out what your password is? I was trying to add the printer to the laptop but it brought up a userid and password box to get into my computer and I have no idea what that password could be. And I don't know what a map drive is. Could you explain? Thanks.

I ran both of those and it says it cannot find either. I really have no idea how this group policy is applicable. And I can't do anything when I bring up my windows firewall because both options to turn it on or off is grayed out. And I can't find anything regarding group policy on my computer. See, the file sharing used to work and then it just stopped one day. But that was a while ago. I am just now looking into how to get it working again and I've done everything else I think I can possibly do except get rid of this group policy. Is there any other way you know of how I can get to it?
