Windows Update has stopped (manually) updating and returns error 80073712. Last listed update was 8/23 when I upgraded the update software. The Updates Installed line on the Control Panel/Windows Update window shows last installed were 8/14. However, new Defender definitions were installed on 8/23 and again on 8/26 after the update software program was updated.
I have tried Windows Restore twice to different checkpoints with no luck due to an unspecified error and no restorations have occured. A Google search for error 80073712 indicates problems with a
C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml file which I either don't have or did a poor job searching for. Since I cannot manually update, I assume the automatic updating is also stopped but I can't verify that.
Has anyone had similar update problems since the new software was added? Should I follow up with this "winsxs" file issue or let Dell try their remote fix magic? Or, how do I contact Microsoft? Their Knowledge Base didn't show my error number.

Thanks for the suggestion. All the symptons are there as described but Regedit could not find the key HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty. Cmd prompt & Regedit were unable to delete as required. Cannot read the log file as it's in machine language.
Still have the problem and additionally found the Windows Features dialog box empty as described in the article (ID: 931712).
I also have the code 80073712 problem. I hope Dell or Microsoft can help. Itried the solutions they offered but nothing helped. Maybe SOMEONE out there can help.
Update: since posting the original problem and trying various fixes with a Mircosoft tech over a month period (rebuilding system files with the Vista dvd, rebuilding the boot file, etc.) I finally reformatted the C:/ partition and reloaded the Dell factory image in mid September. After much downloading and updating, the system works fine now with no recurrences.
I did attempt a system restore a few days ago which failed due to an unspecified error (two different data points were tried). Everything else is normal and I'll probably clean out all the restore points and create a new "everything is working" point and hope I don't need it. I think Vista is a bit over engineered and too complicated for the average non-savy consumer.
I also have the same error code on the vista service pack 1 some one in IT told me it is an issue with vista and the dell vista installation genuine windows issue..
Since reinstalling Vista as described above, I have had no further issues with Windows Update, including the download/install of SP1 and numerous other updates.:smileyhappy:
