Windows won't boot to Safe Mode

I've been trying unsuccessfully for two days to reinstall WinXP on my Dimension 8300.  I've spent about 4 hours on the phone with tech support, and my issues have not been resolved.  My original problem had to do with the monitor flashing on and off and the screen graphics being distorted.  I thought the problem was with my NVIDIA GeForce 5500.  Tech support said it wasn't, and that I needed to reinstall WinXP.  I'm still experiencing A LOT of trouble with the screen going blank during start-up (even with what is a fresh install of WinXP).  My issue for this post is that I now cannot even get Windows to load in Safe Mode.  It starts, but just hangs after several lines of files that are being loaded are displayed.  Thanks for any help...

Just had the same problem getting into safe mode - it starts and after a number of lines it appeared to hang. I also posted earlier on this board. With poking and prodding and reading other boards, it turns out (in my case anyway) that I just had to be patient. I expected a P4 3Ghz machine to boot to safe mode quickly (it boots to normal mode very fast). However if you wait 4-5 minutes, it will probably get there... Not sure why the delay - possibly drivers or something.

    Anyway, hope this helps...

Good luck with your problems with your machine.

Not sure how, but the problem seems to have resolved itself (at least this one).  I actually left the computer in this state overnight thinking the same thing -- it just needs time.  However, after 7 hours, it still had not booted to safe mode.  I still have other video issues that I'm trying to resolve.  Thanks for the reply...

I am wondering if you resolved your problem with your computer not booting up into Safe Mode.  I am having the same problem ... it won't boot into Safe Mode ... it runs a few lines of script and then just stops and freezes.  I cannot boot my computer using the Last Known Good Configuration.

My problem started when I tried to install software from Nielsen Ratings Panel.  In order to finish the installation, it said I had to restart my computer, so when I restarted ... the computer "crashed?".  I get the Dell Logo screen and then I get the Windows XP Professional screen and nothing after that.

I have been unable to get a response from Nielsen (don't know why I really expected to), but just wanted them to know that their software up my computer.

I am also wondering if I am able to do a PC Restore to take it back to the original state like when I first got it?

The only thing I'd hate about that is losing pictures, data, reinstalling all of my software programs again ... you know the drill.

If you were able to resolve your problem, please tell me what you did ... it might help me.

    Thanks!!!

The only way this was resolved was to reinstall WinXP.  This caused me to lose some data that I didn't have backed up.  I also, finally, got Dell to send a new video card.  I think if they would have listened to me and just sent the replacement video card in the first place, I would have not had to reformat my hard drives and my data would have been saved.  I hope you've found an easier resolution to your problem that what I had to suffer through thanks to the knowledgeable technicians at Dell.
