windows won't boot up

I've been a silly boy! I tried to run before I could walk and have now got problems....

I downloaded updated drivers (or so I thought) for my graphics card ATI Radeon 300. Since this, windows won't start without going through that black screen saying there was an error when I shut down, and to restore to a working point - you know the one. Anyway, I have;

rolled back drivers - no joy
re-set drivers with the DELL driver tool - no joy
system restore to a point before I downloaded the ATI drivers - no joy, in safe mode as well.

is there something else I should try before I have to re-install?

PC is a UK Dimension 5150, about 4 months old (so no discs) came with XP media center edition.

    put them back on how?

Where is the best place to get the drivers? DELL or ATI, I've looked on the ATI website and they have several drivers - I don't which one is which - plus the fact it all went pear-shaped when I did this.

The DELL support website has drivers for my video card - I assume these would be the best ones to re-install?

I have no cd's, diskettes, anything, so I have to download.

Check out this thread for more in depth direction.   I would suggest using the drivers from Dell, instead of the ATI.  (at least first go 'round).

(Link to a Driver Cleaner at the bottom).

(I only suggested this, because of your original post regarding the error message)

Does the message not give any further details?

thanks, I'll bare that in mind I guess I'd follow the steps except the installation!

I don't really get an error message, when I turn on, I get the dos screen saying there was some error when shut down, and gives the option to run in safe mode with the countdown thing. When I eventually tried a restore (I didn't get a error with this) and reboot I get into windows proper, windows asks me to send an error report as there was some very bad event. It then recommends downloading updates from microsoft and/or ATI - I did the microsoft updates rebooted - not fixed. I didn't do the ATI update as I didn't know which driver to use. Emerald or someother types.

I will go home tonight with the proper DELL drivers, uninstall the ATI drivers as instructed and see how I get on.

I would have thought the system restore should have fixed this anyway, no?

The usual process is to use Windows Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the drivers.
Then use a Driver Cleaner to complete the process.
Using a Driver Cleaner causes each install of driver to act as though it were the first install.
This is usually a good thing to do since leftover entries in the registry sometimes cause strange behaviour.

    Is this what you did?

Download the ATI Drivers toa Temp Folder.  Uninstall the Video card and reboot .  XP will ask for drivers so then you point to the Temp Folder you downloaded the driver to and let it install.

windows asks me to send an error report

If, after doing the  re-install of the drivers, you still receive the  "send error report"  message on boot, you  have the option of  seeing what the error report contains from that same window.  I would suggest, checking that, and copying the message so you can post it here later.

    Good Luck!
