Windows XP Error...Won't Start OS

When I attempt to start my com, I get this error message: "windows/system32/config/system is corrupt or missing.  You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup usint the original cd-rom."

Now, I don't have this disc, Is there a place that I can get / download this from? My friend has the exact same computer, but he also doesnt have the cd. Can I use his com to make a copy of the repair disc and if not, where would I be able to obtain one from?

Thank you,
   Dave George.

    Hi goldenarmz97,

If your computer system made after July 15, 2004 your hard disk has a partition on it which can be used to restore the system to an "as shipped" condition. The procedure for doing this is given here How Do I Use the Dell PC Restore by Symantec Utility? at http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?dn=1090151

    Hey Brandon,
Is there a way that I would be able to retain my current files? I see there is a "repair" option listed & wondered if keeping my current files would be an option.

If you just repair the installation, your data is safe.  More here:

do the basics first that is if you can get hold of an ordinary vanilla XP disc. Boot to the disk and xp will discover the OS already installed and give you the option of repairing the existing installation. " ways of doing this, basically a reinstall over the top of the existing OS, which as pointed out will preserve data. However it turns the clock back and I have known issues to arise using this method because of compatability problems with already installed service packs etc.
I prefer to use the reapir via Console. Most boot problems in XP can be fixed using the 'fixboot' command and 'fixmbr'. Or course don't forget to run 'chkdsk' which is a fairly good tool for fixing errors and sorting corrupt files. If when you are at the c:\ prompt just type '?' to see a list of commands. But save yourself some grief, try the console method first.....doesn't always work, but when it does it's brilliant.
    Luck

Not unless you boot from the CD and enter the repair console.  There is no native DOS built into XP.

I take it then you have a SATA  or SCSI drive? IF that is the case during the load up screen when XP says, checking system config press F6 for 3rd party drivers, it will at this point that you need to provide XP with the SATA driver............then it will see the drive
