Windows XP - recent update caused multiple problems
I have an Inspiron 6400 that i have had since August. Everything has been working finr with Home network and all other software since then. In the last week, possibly co-inciding with the last update to windows which crashed the computer upon shut-down, mutiple problems have developed on my computer. The most irritating is that it no longer remembers my setting for my local home network - I now have to type in the password every time and it is hit and miss whether once logged onto the router it can communicate with other computers/printers on the network. Multiple error messages appear in upon start up. Sound settings are crazy - the windows noises work, but often media player/internet (e.g. youtube) won't have any sound. The noise upon an outlook express mail is not the one set up in the control panel (minor problem i know) The display occasionally changes and looks more . . 'simple' - i.e. grey bars at top of windows will change to old fashioned font and no shading. My computer has gone from being absolutely fine to being unusable - I don't even know where to start. The Dell support website has been pretty unhelpful. Can anyone suggest any help/where to find help? Thanks
I think we're in the same boat here. I also called DELL tech supoort with zero success. I am frantically searching for a solution myself. I will mark this thread and if I find answer or get my 3 computer to stop acing so unstable I will let you know. Some of the symptoms you mention are what I am experiencing...wierd.
Hi, well some more info I have tried system restore several times, but the same problems occur. I noted some of the error's that come up - they are mostly related to 'svchost.exe'. On searching the net i see that is a common symptom of malicious spyware/viruses. I searched my comp and have a two copies of this on my comp - one in system32 (the proper one) and one in a c:/i386 - is the second one likley to be malicious? I tried scanning with my MacAfee - it cna't find anything but I'm not sure it is up to date since i system restored back two weeks. The windows update tries to update me but keeps crashing The most worrying problem now is the sound one. Help?!
