Windows XP SP2 on Dell Latitude D800
Hi
Is it "safe" to install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 on my Dell Latitude D800? Meaning: Will there be a problem with the drivers, or other functions?

I upgraded to WinXP sp2 last night, and ever since then my Latitude D800 will not wake up from sleep mode. I checked all of the power management settings, and they are set correctly. When I close the lid, the machines goes into standby normally, but when I reopen it, the hard drive light blinks, but the screen does not power up. I have to press and hold the power button to power the machine down, then restart it. I do not get any error screens when rebooting, so I am assuming it is shutting down gracefully. I may roll back to sp1, as it is really annoying!I have the same problem with the "StandBy". When I close the lid or go on Stand-by, I can't recover. I have to completely power cycle the laptop by holding down the power buttton or else the display wont work.
Also my screensaver won't kick in normally. The screen gets completely messed up and a bright white display seems to cover the desktop instead of the screensaver.
This is a really annoying anf big disappointment.

I decided to uninstall WinXP SP2 using the add/remove programs control panel and my Latitude D800 seems to operating normally. I liked the new firewall and other features, but will wait until the system standby "feature" is fixed before installing SP2 again!SteveSchack

The networking problem I encountered after installing SP2 on my Latitude C610 was caused by ZoneAlarm. On a previous SP2 installation on a Dell Dimension, I had simply disabled ZoneAlarm and all went well. For some reason, this didn't work on the Latitude. After completely uninstalling ZoneAlarm and re-installing SP2, the computer is funcitioning properly, with complete network access.
The installation of SP2 did not had any problems.
But when I pull the power plug and switch to battery operation the D800 give a Bleu Screen of Death. And it tells that de gv3.sys causes the problem. That file has something to do withe the powermanagement and the Centrino processor. Sombody knows how to fix this?

The problem I had installing SP2 on my Latitude C610 had to do with ZoneAlarm. It took me some time to understand the problem because I was following the same procedures (disabling but not uninstalling ZoneAlarm prior to running the SP2 update) that I had used successfully on an old Dimension. Once I completely uninstalled ZoneAlarm, SP2 ran smoothly. I have since installed SP2 on 4 more computers, including a Latitude D600, without encountering any significant problems.Sixstrings

I have a dell D800 in which sp2 was installed, then i couldnt bring the computer out of standby mode while undocked, although if i plug in an external monitor i do get a signal. i have the latest drivers and bios updates also i have tested on 2 other D800 laptops and have had the same issue, one of them wouldnt send a signal to a directly connected monitor, but when i docked it the picture returned. Im not sure whats going on and niether is dell at this point...D800 shipped Sept 1st, arrived Sept 7th.
WinUpDate installed sp2 (did this first, so had no experience to compare performance) and had lots of problems with Suspend, Hibernate, random lockups, shutdowns and BSODs.
Before returning, tried removing sp2 in Control Panel and installing just 'critical updates' it still BSODed me this morning and found a USB "serial driver" had swapped itself for an incorrect unsigned driver. Fixed that and it has functioned satisfactorily for rest of today.
When its working, its one marvolous machine but stability and reliability are important and why I went back to Dell from Sony. The Sony has very stable performance but suffered two hardware failures in one year. Wonder if I could use Sony Recovery Disks to install the reliable (also XPpro) software from Sony on the Dell D800?

Yesterday I installed SP2 on a Latitude C610. The installation went smoothly, but wrecked all of my network connections. After installing SP2, I could no longer ping another computer on my network or access the internet. There are no error messages in Event Viewer, ipconfig shows the proper network settings, tweaking the SP2 firewall, or even disabling it, has no effect. When I uninstalled SP2, my network functionality returned to normal. Reinstalling SP2 killed my access to the network again. I have no idea what's wrong. But I have no intention of allowing SP2 on computers at work until evident problems with the upgrade have been worked out.
