XPS 8930, Killer E2400 Gigabit Ethernet Controller

XPS 8930  Current driver version 9.0.0.42 dated 14-Sep-16. Lately, when checking for Windows Updates, it briefly responds with a flash of an update that doesn't really start to download or ever actually install: "Rivet Networks Version 9.0.0.50".

I spent about as much time as I desire looking for a way to resolve this but to no avail.  The only place I found the supposed newer driver it responds with "encountered a problem, unable to install".

Dell Support Assist driver update doesn't report the need for any updates.

I don't see any "symptoms" associated with this other than the annoyance of a failed update.

Killer software version 3.1122.104.2 installed, just FYI if it matters.

Appreciate the help.

Oh I completely understand the problem of being addicted to upgrades or updates.  But as a pilot and aerospace engineer, I am also hyper-critical of software insufficiencies that cause annoying alerts--no better and perhaps much worse than junk mail !

If current ethernet speed is perfectly all right, then no need to have worries over spurious LAN driver update.

no need to heed Windows update call or Dell support assist.  your own assessment of ethernet performance trumps AI recommendation.

users tend to have a sense of happiness when all drivers are "updated" but often the opposite is true that many updates are not needed and may only introduce bugs.

@gdof15   - Did you look in Device Manager to see what driver version is listed for Killer E2400 after you ran that update?

And did you look at your Windows Update History to see what it reports about this update after you tried to install it? Does it say "successful" or "failed"?

I actually ran that Killer update via WU last week, and it was finished very quickly. WU History says it was "successful" on 1-18-22. When I look in Device Manger it lists driver v9.0.0.50, but I've actually had v9.0.0.50 installed on my XPS 8930 for >1 year.  So WU is way behind, and messed up...

If Device Manager still lists v9.00.42, I suggest you manually download the driver directly from Dell's support page onto your PC and install it. IIRC, this one installs Killer driver v9.0.0.50, or maybe v9.0.0.49.

Often, these Dell-Validated drivers are just to get a machine running initially (like from a clean Windows-Install).

Also, while the Dell Drivers work, they often include all the parts (maybe a control-panel, an App, more Startup-Processes, etc.). I often call them "Heavy Driver Suites", while the ones you get from Windows-Update are "leaner" (because they often just include the core-parts that are really required).

Anything truly required should eventually get submitted to Microsoft, and get downloaded to your machine via Windows-Update.

Driver version is 9.0.0.42 (see my first sentence--not being sarcastic, just reminding that I did look into this somewhat, given that it is a nuisance problem mostly).

Windows Update history shows 9.0.0.50 successful install multiple time (I assume every time I manually check for updates and see the momentary Rivet Network install message).

Note I have Killer Performance Driver Suite UWD also installed.  Revo says it's version 3.1122.182.  Oddly (to me anyway) it only appears in the Windows app list, not in my start app menu.  So what have I messed up here trying to chase after a nuisance problem annoyance?

Note: network/internet speed not a problem--I live fairly remotely so I am limited to DSL (you're probably chuckling now!)

Sorry-- been away for a bit.  Tried manually installing from the link you sent.

    - Driver version still v9.0.0.42

    - Still get the "flash" message on Windows update of installing Rivet Networks 9.0.0.50 every time update is run.  Driver install history shows it is "successfully installed"

Last two days after PC put to sleep, on wake got error code 43 (windows stopped the E2400 after it reported a problem).  Restarting PC works but as I said, happened again

Seems no matter what I do I am stuck with v42, Windows thinks v50 is installed and now a new problem.

Removed all Killer-associated software, using their own software removal tool. Several reboots.

E2400 still shows v9.0.0.42 driver.  (ethernet working fine)

Intel Driver Support Assist thinks v9.0.0.42 is up-to-date.

Dell Support Assist has no updates.

    Go figure.

@gdof15  Sometimes you just have to completely uninstall a device like the NIC in Device Manager and then click Action>Scan for hardware changes on the DM toolbar. When it finds the NIC, have it look for the driver...

Thing is, I don't know what version driver the current Dell link to Killer driver will install.

I have 9.0.0.50 (1-14-2020) running and the last downloaded Killer installer file I have is _A21, but the one currently on the support page is _A29.

It's possible that 've gone back to 9.0.0.42 for some unspecified reasons. And that's the version that was originally installed when I got my XPS 8930 in 12/2019.

Bottom line, if your E2400 is working ok with 9.0.0.42, just leave things alone...
