If you are talking about recent but not newest models such as XPS8940 vs Aurora R11/12, 8940 chassis has better air cooling than R11/12. R11/12 has more bling LED effect which is just RGB show not essential to pc function. otoh 8940 uses highly proprietary mobo and psu, while R11/12 mobo/psu have standard form factor. both use Dell oem gpu and ram.
Historically, the differentiation is that Alienware has the larger power-supplies, liquid-cooling, the best processors (like Intel-i9 and K-class, equivalent AMD CPUs), sometimes more slots, and coolness-factor (led lights and Aliens), etc.
XPS is more mainstream (and not really gaming focused). Some are sold on business-side to SMB.
