Charging heat

Hi. I'm a little concerned about my new XPS 17. I'd assumed that once charged it would stop charging, and therefore stop generating quite so much heat, but..... I put it on to charge at 10pm last night (fully switched off on a hard, flat, laminate floor with no obstructions) and unplugged it 8 hours later at 6am this morning. The underneath - especially towards the hinge, was ridiculously hot. I had shorts on and there was no way I could have rested it on my lap. I didn't check the separate charger block till a few minutes later, by which time that was certainly warm, but nothing like the laptop. This has happened a few times in the week I've had it, although probably not quite this hot. I'm only getting around 3 hrs use from a full charge down to less than 10% and that's with the screen on it's next to lowest brightness setting and its just being used to read PDF's (no videos playing and nothing major running in the background). Even then, the fan seems to be running most of the time. I can't imagine the heat I felt from the case today can be doing anything any good in there - certainly not the battery. Does anyone know if this sounds way off normal?
