Aurora R6, ram upgrade

Hey all,

I have an Aurora R6 (7HV66 motherboard) I bought back in 2017.

I am wondering what RAM should I add for smoother performance and less general lag and to be able to handle more tasks with this motherboard?

My specs:

I7 -7700K

GTX 1080

16 GB single-channel @ 1196MHz RAM

Pretty sure it has 4 slots. Also wondering if I should keep or get rid of my old ram? Which is compatible? I am in Toronto

Hi @Mahid.101  welcome to this Alienware Laptop forum. Your other Aurora R6 posts are on the Alienware Desktop forum.

Clicking on Product Support will take you to Memory specifications that are supported within Dell Warranty. Advocate visit to Corsair, etc. and get their current recommendations to assist with your deliberations. There are also online annual reviews for the best RAM offerings, some specific to the Aienware Aurora

Dell expects users to upgrade their RAM capacity and speed. When you are satisfied with the new RAM, consider selling the original RAM on eBay, Amazon, etc.

This Aurora R6 wants smoother performance, less general lag and to be able to handle more tasks? It seems that this system is not optimised and/or has degraded. Drives have a finite life, please check disk OS(C:) to remove any file errors and CrystalDiskInfo to determine drive health status. Move all your little used files to the storage drive, so that the OS(C:) drive can expand temporary storage in real time, without delay. Remember to create a clone of the OS(C:) drive as part of your disaster recovery plan.

The answer depends on what you're running, and on what's not smooth.  If you're running out of RAM with the applications you're running, more may help -- and allow less swap to virtual memory.  Or if you're gaming on the system, a faster GPU (which you may want to hold off on for while, given the astronomical prices and limited availability of graphics cards at present).  There's no generic answer without your evaluating what is currently lacking.

The system can take up to 64G of RAM, but short of a CPU upgrade, the RAM will run at the same speed you now have, even if you install faster RAM.

I consistently get 250+ fps on the games I play, it is just that when I have multiple chrome tabs open it freezes overall and jas trouble keeping up. This tells me its something to do with ram, so just wondering which to go for.

Also I recently installed a Corsair H60 Liquid cooler for my CPU, and its working fine. I believe more RAM is the answer, anywhere to guide me on which to go for?

What I meant by smoother performance was when I am playing games and have multiples chrome tabs on, (which I use) it starts to lag just a bit, however, my in game FPS is always at 250 or more. This is telling me its something to do with the ram. I only have one 16 gB RAM in there and I think its time for an upgrade. Recently installed a new corsair H60 liquid cooler in it so really not trying to junk it just yet. Thanks for all the info.
