Aurora R8, suddenly won't power on

Hi all,

Been using my Aurora R8 since December 2019 and have had no dramas with it until today.

This morning I powered it on as I usually do and used my PC for a few hours and turned it off for the day. All ran fine.

Went just now to power it on for some late night gaming and hitting the power button on the tower does nothing at all. Its like completely dead.

I pressed the little button at the back of the tower next to the power cord and I hear the fans power up and a green light comes on but soon as I let go of the button it shuts all down again.

Have tried removing the power cord from the wall socket and holding the power button down for 15-30 seconds and then reconnecting the power and trying but sadly no luck.

Really starting to freak out now at the moment as I dont know what has happened or what else I could do?

Has this ever happened to anyone before with the R8 or similar model?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

I had Windows update service disabled all together but while I was installing OCC it applied the update again on restart.

So basically updated last night and also this morning I'm tired of rolling back my bios each time I'm going to disable capsule from bios

Sooooo In addition to everything mentioned you need to delete the update files from windows update or else it will auto apply the update on restart. I had windows update differed for 30 days and update service disabled but still applied the update. So you need to go into C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete all the files in download.

Check your windows notifications to see if you got an update queued (bottom right)

The update was pushed via windows so it may be done without your permission

Exact same issue. My warranty just ran out so I renewed it by paying the "EXTRA" fee. This should not be happening to a very expensive computer that is only 3 years old. What I discovered is, push the front Alien head button and press the red button next to the power supply on the back, my computer turns back on. I tried all the other stuff like discharge, change battery, unplug all peripherals. The two button trick works the best for me. I haven't even updated the BIOS and this started two days ago.

Unfortunately, that didn't work for me.  My C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder is empty and it still installed 1.0.17 on restart multiple times.

I had to install 1.0.9 (for the 6th time) and then shut down (which doesn't trigger the patch), power back on and go straight into the BIOS and turn off the UEFI Firmware Capsule Updates option as listed earlier in this thread.

What a mess. An official response to all this would be nice from Dell.

Thanks for the help everyone, I woke this morning to find out my R8 also had the same issue. After doing a little reading on my phone Chris had a post about plugging the power cord in the same time while holding the power button. That worked!

Weird thing is about the ordeal is the BIOS(1.0.17)(updated with Alienware update) is I had updated it over 10 days ago. The command center(5.4.7.0) over 8 days ago. So why randomly days later decide not to boot?

I wonder why now they decided to push the BIOS updates through Windows Update? Never seen that happen before.

The BIOS fix is version 1.0.9 which was released back in 2019 December i believe.

Thats the only version that got mine to working order again.

Official response is Pay for extra warranty to talk to us, once you do that they will say R8 is old, get a new R12 Or check this post for a workaround until a new bios version. There I just saved you some money.

For me though (and i just checked) the last critical update i had from Windows Update shown in my History was installed 12th October 2021 and after that my PC was still starting ok every single morning.

I know for my problem specifically only the BIOS Firmware was updated with nothing else and the next day my PC would not start.

That's how with the Dell Tech we were able to find out so quickly what was causing the problem as the BIOS was the last thing updated only on my R8.

Hmm, I think this might be related to a Windows update. This started for me after installing critical Windows updates - I ignored the optional Alienware firmware update because I was going to check SupportAssist for it (things were fine, so no rush to update anything). Then next time I tried to turn on with the power button, nothing happened. When I finally able to boot up, I checked SupportAssist and noticed that there was the firmware update 1.0.17. So for me, this seemed to start after installing Windows update without installing any firmware updates.
