Aurora-R4, 8.1 update, Fan Issues

My PCI and Hard drive fans just started running wide open all the time shortly after Windows 8.1 update. They respond to manual control but when on auto they run at 100%. I uninstalled the Command Center Controls, removed the registry keys, rebooted and installed the latest Command Center package from the web and the problem persisted. Thinking it was a Windows 8.1 error I reset to the factory Windows 7 build that originally came on the computer and it seemed to work correctly for a day or so and is now running the fans wide open again. The ePSA diagnostics check out and all the fans past diagnostic testing. All temperature readings say 77 degrees F and it states the cooling pump is running. I'm seeing alot of info about faulty  master I/O boards possibly being the culprit. Anyone have any experience with this issue before I jump through tech support. I work overnights and can't troubleshoot on the phone with a rep until next week.

Hello,

Sorry for my English : I'l French (nobody is perfect ! )

I got the same problem with my Alien Aurora R4 using Windows 8.1 and A10 BIOS version.
Impossible to set up fans speed by using auto mode. 2 fans running at 100% while temperature are at a low level.(PCI and Hard Drives fans)

I have fixed that problem by uninstalling my 'Command Center' program, downloading the special windows 8.1 'Command Center' here :
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails?driverId=P1K0M

I downloaded the file called App_NT_AWCC305010_W8_W81_W7_Setup_P1K0M_ZPE.exe available since December 2nd 2013.

and I restarted my PC after installing the new Command Center program.

Now, all is OK : Fans are runing with a low speed by using the auto mode.
I hope it will help you.

Hi, I have the same problem here, mine is Aurora ALX.

It shouldn't be the OS problem, as the fan keeps run at 100% during the OS installing process!

The only way to "fix" this problem is set thermal control in CC as Manual. Let me know if you find any new solutions.

I just spent an hour with tech support. They were fast and friendly and had me go through the process of uninstalling Command Center and a Power Dissipation reset. This has fixed the problem. However....... I had already done the same process once and it worked then too. The trouble is it started running the fans wide open again the next morning. They stated they don't think its my Master I/O board because the AlienFX controls and manual fan control is functioning. My sensors read a flat 75 degrees F across the board no matter the load on my PC when the fans are at 100%. I hope this took care of it. My warranty is out in a few months and I want this taken care of before then.

hi,

i had a simlilar problem and tried all different stuff. In the end it was windows 8.1. i tried to refresh windows to windows 8 but it errored. i then tried to install an image but it said that it was an icompatible file system.

In the end i reinstalled windows 8, installed my image, uninstalled command control and then reinstalled it again.  Until i did my last reeboot the fans were going crazy.

I have seen in some post that command center is not supported by windows 8.1 but this seems a bit crazy as I am sure most people would have it automatically updated or updated it not realising.

Trying to get back to Windows 8 with all my data took 3 solid days.of looking at posts and trying various thngs.

I want to know what's wrong with my computer.

This is not what I expected but thanks anyway.

Also, can you recommend a reasonable curve?

Try Manual then setup a reasonable Curve.

I just got a new Aurora R4 this week myself, and it had the same problem. Doing a search, I read to remove the Alienware Command software, reboot the system, and then reload it, which I did w/o any success.

Later, going through Tech Support, they said to make sure that it is TOTALLY removed. They remotely took over my system and loaded a program called Revo Uninstaller Pro, in order to make sure ALL the files are removed that are associated w/the Alienware Command software. I would imagine that cleans the Registry as well. They then shut the system down, where they had me unplug the power cord, and then had me press the power button in for about 30 seconds, replug the power cord back in, and power back up. Once back in Windows, they had me reload the Alienware Command Software.

Now in my case, nothing changed, because it was later determine that there was a problem w/my motherboard, because there were other issues, but in your case, it may be simply the software, so following the procedure, as they did w/my system, may help you.

How did you solve this?

I am still having this issue. It is unbelievable that Dell/ Alienware are being so unhelpful about this topic when it is affecting everybody?

I have had this problem for a long time now. The only way to quieten the fans is to reinstall the Alienware Command Centre following the instructions in another thread. It sometimes takes several attempts before the fans drop to idle. I can then run for a few days before it happens again. I now go to Control Panel, Programs and Features and then click to uninstall the Alienware Control Centre, then select repair. This puts the fans back to idle and I tell it not to restart. I can then use the computer until I switch of. Then it repeats. Not a satisfactory solution. DELL need to fix this.

Well...I fixed it yesterday and unfortunately it happens again today. Seems like there are some serious flaws in the Command Center.

If you just want to solve the problem temporally, just uninstall and reinstall the command center like what GoHack and other people said.

Otherwise, before Dell fix this problem, I recommend manually set the fan speed in Command Center, It's still annoying when you boot the computer, but that's the best I can think of.

Anyway, I'm disappointed, Dell have to fix this problem ASAP.

I had this same issue on my R4, but it seems permanently resolved.  I hope it does not happen again like it has for some.  I am using UEFI; Secure Boot; Windows 8.1; Command Center.  Fans stay normal even during boot other than a few brief spin-ups.  All my AlienFX lights work using prior saved settings from before Windows 8.1 upgrade (I just had to reload the saved setup since Command Center reinstall reverted to defaults).
