I have the same question and wondering as these cards are PCIe4 and apart from the size issue is there a compatability issue also. It means that the previous generation cards are the last bunch that we can choose to use, although if it means the 2080 TI comes down in price then this could be tempting.
Yes the 3080 is only a "little" bigger than the 1080 but the AGA was only designed to hold cards up to the size of the 1080 and no more. A 3070 is to tall, the 3080 is to tall and to long and of course the 3090 is just massive. The only way to continue to use the AGA moving forward is to remove the cover. As for PCIE Gen 4 vs Gen 3, these cards will work fine on PCIE Gen 3 wether or not there is a performance hit due to teh limitation of the AGAs PCIE Gen 3 x4 vs a full x16 will need to wait for testing.
However we run at 4x. This isn't a problem if the GFX card is doing most of the heavy lift since we output directly from the GFX card. However if the game still sends a lot of processing to the CPU then you're relying on that 4x limitation. Likewise the 3080s have a technology to help them save information to your fast SSD this is where PCI 4.0 would help.
I still dont' think you'll have to mod the box much but I also don't know if the performance with a 3080 will be much better than moving to a 2080 TI or even just staying on a 1080.
I'll get my hands on a card when they come out and will try to remember to come back to this ancient forum to provide feedback. That's if this lets me submit this post without kicking out again...
Thanks both for confirming the backwards compatibility. I thought this meant motherboards not graphics cards. I found this article that confirmed also.
So a bit of case modding of the AGA is fine with me. Will wait for someone to benchmark with GTX 3070 to see what the performance is like. Looking promising
Yeah I saw some comparisons, somehwere, between different games, some using more GPU than CPU, others using more CPU and only hitting 50% GPU. So you are right this could be a problem. Depends on the devs I guess.
What peaked my interest was this benchmark I came across for an older Alienware running a 2080 TI in the AGA.
With my M15 R2 + GTX 2070 MaxQ with some overclocking I am getting 7626 for the same benchmark test. I need to do more research to see if its worth my while and investment in a new card. My current setup works well but always good to see how you can get more performance.
Will check out the vid and will keep an eye out on Reddit and Notebook forums as well as here. Be good to see what you find. Oh and yeah I wont need to mod the AGA, maybe just leave it open a bit.
@kqmqverick and others, since this forum is mostly intended for user-to-user support, official answers from Dell Support are relatively rare. (And official answers that are actually correct are even more rare, but that's a separate issue....) You're asking about compatibility with a product that hasn't been launched yet, so there might not even BE an official answer yet. But even if there is, I would recommend keeping an eye out for updates to official technical documentation rather than counting on an official Dell rep who has the right answer seeing this particular thread. Or just wait for an early adopter to try it out. Real world confirmation beats official compatibility statements all the time, because even if Dell never goes back and "officially" confirms compatibility, that doesn't mean it wouldn't actually work. There are all sorts of accessories on Dell's site with incomplete system compatibility lists -- and therefore all sorts of reports of people successfully using those accessories with other systems not on the list.

Can you elaborate a bit on the size concern? 1080 and 3080 founders are about the same size (3080 slightly longer).
1080: 10.5x4.3x2
3080: 11.2x4.4x2
Agreed we won't get PCIe 4 speeds but should still be an upgrade.

Maximum length = 10.5"
Maximum height = 4.37"
Maximum width = dual slot

First of all, this forum's tech is ancient and terrible.
I posted on Reddit and Notebook Review as well you can see some photos here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/aga-size-and-3080-compatibility.834004/
You can also see a bit of difference between 8x and 16x on the 2080 TI here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAwIh1nSOQ8&t=530s

I think they might update the graphics amp for the new 3000 series as it’s supposed to be a external GPU hub right?
they might make a triple slot update and make the height a little bigger to accommodate the taller and wider GPU sizes plus the bigger power usage.
