The screen isn’t completely black can make out the screen. It looks as though the backlight is beyond extremely dim.

With the power adapter unplugged and the system off, hold the power button for 30 sec.
Then try powering up again.

Ok power adapter was unplugged. I shut down the system. I held the power button for 30 sec released and it powered up……..no joy still super dim, have to hold a flashlight up to the screen to make things out. Any other options?

It's either the backlight in the screen or the mainboard (which powers the backlight). You may want to have a shop determine which, as either part will be expensive -- and you don't want to replace them by trial and error.

Go HERE. Enter the private Service Tag number. What specific model? What warranty? Under "Quick links", click "View product specs" to see the applicable hardware components.
