Alienware 17 R5 - Battery and fan Replacement

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out for some guidance regarding my Alienware 17 R5 (2018 model). This laptop has been with me for many years and holds a lot of sentimental value, so I really want to keep it in good condition even though it’s no longer my primary device.

Issue 1: Swollen Battery

Recently, I noticed that the battery has swollen. I’m sure the battery has reached the end of its life, and I’m concerned about safety as well as potential damage to the chassis. I would like to know the best way to replace it with a safe and original part.

Issue 2: Fan Noise

When I boot the laptop, the fans make a noticeable noise. It sounds like either dust buildup or the fans are starting to fail. I’m looking for suggestions on whether:

  • Cleaning and re-pasting would be enough, or

  • If it’s better to replace the fans completely.

My Situation

I’ve recently purchased a new Alienware laptop, so this 17 R5 won't be my main system anymore. But it is still very special to me, and I want to make sure it remains safe and usable for years to come.

Request

Could anyone please advise on:

  • The correct battery model and where to get original replacements

  • Recommended fan replacements or maintenance steps

For the fan, try a thorough internal cleaning first.

For the battery, get rid of it immediately - the system will run on AC power without a battery in the meantime.

it is unlikely you'll find any new, OEM battery for a system this old - look for a reputable supplier of third party batteries online.
