Thanks, @jchpmn .. my system is older than 2020 so My Alienware is incompatible.
I have managed to fix the problem by reinstalling both Alienware update and Support assist. I was only able to do it on the second attempt when I deleted all install references using the Revo uninstaller.
I had that problem when I first got my laptop (M15 r6) in February of this year. From reading other people's forum posts, I discovered that Alienware Command Center behaves better for some people when downloaded from the Windows Store instead of the pre-installed one. So I uninstalled AWCC and got the Microsoft Store one instead (named "My Alienware" as a package), and sure enough it worked for me.
