m15 R1, BIOS Failure? POST failure on boot
Hey Dell community! I hope I got the right listing, but I need your help.
I have an Alienware m15 R1 laptop, an old PC I know but I got it second hand and it was a good price.
i wanted to get the display repaired because the original owner said the display stopped working, so I take it in and they can’t get the new screen to turn on. So they replace the cable for the screen. It still won’t work, so the workers at the shop I took it to said that they didn’t think it would be fair to just replace each component they’d think it would be until something fixed it.
so I come to all of you!
Upon turning on the PC myself, it yells at me with 3 loud alert tones. The Alien Head flashes Red 2 times and then Blue 7 times.
Recap:Laptop. Display doesn’t turn on. Upon turning on, the PC yells at me. 2 reds, 7 blues. Possible POST failure? Motherboard issue?

Page 103 Table 8. Diagnostics = 2,7 LCD failure
The m15 R1 has three video out ports (page 8) that you can use to test on an external monitor to possibly bypass the LCD =

@DELL-ChrisM2 I was told that I could use an external Display to bypass the display, my only concern is figuring out if something can be replaced in the laptop to get the LCD to work properly again.
if not then I will rely on an external display

Hi
To supplement the excellent response given by @DELL-ChrisM2 the Internet offers an expanded list of alternates/solutions etc...
Hope this Helps...
On an Alienware M15‑series (including the M15 R1 and later R3/R4/R5/R6/R7), a “2‑7” error (often described as 2 red, 7 blue / white flashes on the power‑button LEDs) means the laptop is failing the Power‑On Self‑Test (POST) with a display failure error.
What “2,7” means on an M15
The SBIOS message is effectively “Display failure”; the system is not able to initialise the internal display or the video output path properly.
The laptop may power on (fans spin, lights come up), but the screen stays black or shows only the LED flash pattern.
Common causes on an M15 R1
Loose or damaged LVDS/eDP cable between the motherboard and the display panel (very common after screen removal or re-paste).
Faulty LCD panel or backlight circuit; sometimes the system will still boot and show output on an external monitor (HDMI/DP) even if the internal panel is dead.
BIOS‑related or firmware issue (e.g., a bad BIOS update, or certain UEFI‑CA / Secure‑Boot‑related settings that break video initialisation on some M15 revisions).
GPU or motherboard fault (less common), since the error can also point indirectly to a problem driving the display interface.
Things you can try (M15 R1‑style diagnostics)
Check external display
Plug in an HDMI or DisplayPort monitor and power on.
If Windows or the BIOS shows up on the external screen but the lid screen stays black, the issue is likely the internal display, cable, or connectors.
Reseat internal display cable
Carefully open the bottom case and unplug/replug the LVDS/eDP cable from both the motherboard and the display assembly.
Visually inspect the cable and motherboard connector for damage, bent pins, or burns.
Test BIOS‑recovery or RTC reset
Disconnect AC, hold the power button for ~25–35 seconds to reset the RTC, then reconnect AC and try booting.
If available, trigger BIOS recovery (usually
Ctrl+Escand then plug in AC while holding power) and choose to reset BIOS to defaults. If recently updated BIOS
Dell has documented that BIOS updates on some M15‑series machines can trigger a no‑POST 2‑7 error; rolling back to a known‑good BIOS version via a USB‑flash or recovery can fix it.
If nothing changes
At that point, suspect the LCD panel itself, the LVDS connector on the motherboard, or a board‑level GPU/display‑rail fault.
In practice, that often means a motherboard repair or replacement if the panel and cable are confirmed good.

@Nepia
The three beep sequence means the issue likely wasn't the display, but a bad system board.

See PDF Service Manual.
The BIST test will test LCD.
Try CMOS and/or RTC reset.
Finally try BIOS-Recovery from Flash-drive.
