m15 R5, will not shut down after BIOS update

Recently updated the BIOS to 1.13.1 from the support assist application. After this I noticed that the computer will not shut down, and any attempts to shut the computer down will cause it to restart instead. The only way to have the computer shut down now is to force shutdown by an extended press of the power button, which can cause damage to the components. I have changed nothing in the BIOS. Funny enough, occasionally I receive an error message:

"FAN functin is failure." This is honestly laughable, not only from the poor grammar and spelling but also because both fans are spinning in both low power and high power states. It would seem to me like this BIOS update is causing problems, which I'm not sure can be fixed. I've attempted the following:

1. Resetting BIOS settings

2. Rolling back BIOS to 1.12.1

3. Reinstalling Windows

4. Removing Fast Boot

5. Removing restart on system failure

6. Removing hibernation

Hi @JayG2 welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum.

Alienware m15 R5 System BIOS | Driver Details | Dell US.

The Drivers & Downloads BIOS/UEFI version should never be updated just because a new version becomes available. Only update if system or an application asks for BIOS/UEFI update or it provides an additional function that you want.

I'm not convinced that the answer to BIOS updates is "you shouldn't update unless there's a different function" when these frequently patch vulnerabilities.

Regardless, I solved the problem which I will detail in another post as it will likely be deleted. The problem is Wake on LAN and Modern Standby became enabled in BIOS, but these settings are hidden and not in the consumer level BIOS. That's a little ridiculous.

Hi Jay,

I have the same laptop and the same problem today. I try your suggestion but it doesn't work. On Monday I will contact the technical support.
