Try again, but beforhand:

Unplug the battery from the mainboard (with AC power disconnected).  Hold the power button for 30 sec.

Then install the new RAM.  This will reset the embedded controller chip.  Then reassemble the system and try booting.  It likely will take a few minutes and a couple of boot cycles to reconfigure the EC firmware from the main board firmware.

@ejn63​ Thanks for responding, but still no joy with the Crucials. I unplugged the battery, pressed the power button way more than 30 seconds for good measure, and put in the Crucial sticks. System will work just fine with one Crucial stick in Slot A, but once a Crucial occupies Slot B, the boot and start up problems come up again.
