m17 R3, will not start
My original power supply ended up having a bad wire. I got a replacement off of Amazon. Used it for a day and a half and the laptop just shutdown on me. No warning on battery or anything. Tried restarting would not restart. Disconnected the battery held the power button for 15-20 secs, plugged battery back in and power cord no response. Even tried leaving the battery unplugged and just ran off the Power supply and still no boot.
So went into diagnosis mode, took the laptop apart got down to the power connector. Disconnected the connector from the motherboard plugged in the power connector and check the pins. 19.9v across the pins, and 16.5v across the signal pin (brown) with the original power supply. The checked the power supply itself 19.9v across the outer and inner barrel, and 3.3 across the signal pin. Plugged in the new power supply and got 19.9v across the power pins but only 15.5 on the signal pin. So i checked the connector on the power supply and got 19.9v across the inside of barrel and outside but nothing on the signal pin.
So i plugged in the dell power supply and checked the battery connector and i am getting power to the battery and signal pins for temp and other things, but still no boot or start up.
So i left the power supply plugged in over night and tried powering on in the morning and it did not turn on. So i unplugged the power supply connector and checked the output of the battery and it was showing 11.5v for battery amount. So the battery charged over night.
So went to checking the power button, it has 6 pins. The second pin was reading 2.3v the rest read 0v. So i put the probe on pin 2 and pressed the button and that went to 0v and pins 3,4, and 5 went to 5v. So Copilot says 5v reading says the 5V_AUX standby rail is alive, and the 2.9v on pin 2 means the 3.3V_AUX rail is also alive.
Next Copilot says to check the coils by the CPU/GPU to see if they are getting voltage but that is getting out of my scope.
I went to Hardware Diagnostics and was going to send it in but it says "It’s recommended you disable the system password". i have a password on my windows account do i need to remove that?

What happens when you press the power button to attempt a boot? If any power is getting to the motherboard but the system won't power on then you should be getting a diagnostic light code on the power button which will help you pinpoint the error.

Hi
I would run it with the battery DIS-CONNECTED. Check what voltage readings you can.
Hard Reset and boot.
Then repeat with the battery connected.

Well i get no error codes from the power switch. It doesn't light up or do anything, doesn't blink, beep, or turn the fans on.
And i have tried with the battery disconnected, will will check voltage across the power button with the battery disconnected to see if it is getting power from the connector.

So i got a resolution.
tried holding the power button for 20 secs and it did nothing. I held it longer and it flashed codes and was able to get it to restart and boot.
Not sure what i did to get it to work, but holding for more than 20 secs reset it.

I usually suggest 30-60 seconds for a power reset. In the old days you had to remove the main battery when doing the power reset but I believe you can do it with the battery still plugged in on newer machines. I'm glad you got it sorted.
