Can you open SQL Server Configuration Manager on this server? Is the "Named Pipes" protocol enabled?
Are there any other errors around this time in the Windows Application Event Log?

Strange. We use the version 6.1.101-87 SQL plugin and haven't ran into this issue. Any idea what the problem was with the more recent agent version?

Thanks.. turned out the latest 6.1.101 SQL agent was the problem.. we went back to the prior 6.1 agents and everything works fine.
