Can we setup Avamar Single node or Virtual Edition to use multiple NICs

I'm not certain about AVE but you can definitely configure Gen4 single nodes to use multiple NICs. By default, single nodes ship with two pairs of bonded NICs. The bond on bond0 can be broken into discrete NICs and configured for specific "uses". The supported NIC uses are:

• management
• backup
• replication

There is also an "internal" use reserved for inter-node traffic on multi-node grids.

It is also possible to configure VLANs if you would prefer to keep the bond intact. This would be preferred if, for example, you would like to have a high availability configuration on the front end network.

Since this isn't a break-fix activity, it will likely require a professional services engagement. I would recommend getting in touch with your account team.

I'm certified for Avamar implementations, but I can't find anything about multi-nic in an Avamar Virtual Edtion.

Of course I could add a NIC in VMware to this AVE appliance.... but is this supported ? And most important has someone already done this ? Is there any documentation about this ?

Or is this simply NOT DONE with a single node Avamar server ?

I can't think of any technical limitations that would prevent this but I believe the AVE image is still running Red Hat even for 6.0 servers so it might not be supported. I will check with the AVE team and get back to you.

I spoke with the product manager for the AVE product. He informed me that running an AVE with multiple NIC cards is not tested so it is not officially supported. That said, I'm not aware of any technical reason this would not work.

I don't believe there is documentation covering this specific scenario but it would be very similar to several existing procedures. I know there is documentation for multiple NICs on Gen3 as a number of sites have had this configuration qualified. The process for implementing the changes on the OS side would be similar to the Gen3 process since AVE currently runs RHEL. On the Avamar software side, the Gen3 process would be used for 5.x versions and the Gen4 process for 6.x versions (which have greatly improved support for multiple NICs).

I would recommend submitting a Request for Product Qualification (RPQ) through your local EMC rep if you would like to have a multi-NIC AVE qualified.
