Expected capacity of a 6TB Avamar RAIN array
How much data should I expect to protect on a 6TB RAIN array? When the server reports "bytes protected" I presume this is the sum of the last backups of each client. I have heard wildly varing figures on the amount of depdupe we should expect. We are looking at a 30 day rotation with a mixture of structured and unstrcutured data.

It really depends on the type of data that you will be protecting.
There is a way to find out what your deduplication will be on all your servers, get in touch with your local EMC guys to get them to come and do that for you.
Also, the "bytes protected" is the real data size that has been protected, not the deduplicated size.

The rule of thumb I was given when sizing an Avamar system is 1:1.
So, let's say that if you have 6TB of RAW undeduped data, then you should be using at least a 6TB Avamar system.
The above was loosely based on certain retention policy assumptions. i.e. yearlies = 7 years retention, weeklies = 4 weeks and so forth.
But if you have been given an Avamar backup solution, pre-sales would have performed some sort of sizing excercises for your backup environment of which the results suggested the 6TB Avamar system.
You did mention a 30 day retention, so I am assuming 30 days of daily backups and after that they expire. What happens to the weeklies, monthlies and yearly backups? These would have an impact on how much dedupe data you eventually can keep and also have an impact of how much more RAW and dedupe data can be kept online in the Avamar system.
And the first reponse is correct, bytes protected is the amount of RAW data that your Avamar is currently protecting.
