How many files

so Looking at the NDMP manual, it says a single Avamar backup has a limit of 10 million files.

so how to you find out how many files are in a backup?

NDMP, or windows or Linux backup, how do you tell how many files?

If you have access to the avtar logs, the easiest way to check the number of files is to look at the logs. There is an informational message with code <8688> that is recorded in the logs every 15 minutes by default. This message records the following:

  • Date and time
  • Total number of files processed so far
  • Total number of directories / folders processed so far
  • Total size of data processed so far
  • Number of new files in the backup so far (first field in brackets)
  • Size of new data transmitted to the server (second field in brackets)
  • New data percentage (final field in brackets)
  • Memory usage at the time the message was recorded
  • CPU usage at the time the message was recorded
  • Name of last file or folder processed by the client

There is also an info message with code <5156> that provides a final status message when the backup wraps up.

Here are (anonymized) samples of the two messages:

2014-09-11 10:50:54 avtar Info <8688>: Status 2014-09-11 10:50:54, 124,803 files, 15,428 folders, 50.67 GB (56 files, 11.63 MB, 0.01% new) 1456MB  14% CPU  C:\Documents\Finance\Yearly\2009\

...

2014-09-13 09:14:57 avtar Info <5156>: Backup #123 timestamp 2014-09-13 09:14:57, 14,148,810 files, 626,875 folders, 2,240 GB (89,830 files, 4.929 GB, 0.14% new)

Please let me know if you have any questions.
