Move client to sub-domain using VM Tags

Hello, I am fairly new to Avamar, and have just enabled adding clients using VM Tags. The client(s) now appear in Avamar, under the domain for the vCenter they are managed by. How can I automate moving these clients to a sub-domain, and apply a backup policy defined for each sub-domain?

Domain

V /

V vcenter domain  (clients added here)

     V VirtuatlMachines

       > mwf backups (want to move clents here, and apply backup policy)

I have attempted to configure the vcenter to add the clients directly to the sub domain, but this does not work.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

As you are using VM Tags, do note that if the VMware tag is e.g. SQLServer in MSSQL category, the correct notation in Avamar would be MSSQL.SQLServer. Avamar is case-sensitive in most places, so write it verbatim...

Leave out the vCenter name in the folder name and write it in the correct case as well.

I'm really out of ammo here. If you still can't make it work, you need to contact support.

You need to create rules with the VM Tags. Then you need to edit the vCenter domain object, enable "Enable Dynamic VM import by rule", add a rule and select the rule you made from drop down list and type in the domain name under vcenter, e.g. /VirtualMachines/mwf backups (not sure if you need quotes with space)

If you're using the Java client, the it's really the same procedure, except it's called "Add domain mapping".

I'm not sure if the changes are reflected immediately but you can always manually sync with vCenter.

Thanks for the response. I have enabled import by rule, but it will not work if I try to use anything under the vCenter domain. Also, I am wanting to import into several sub domain (folders), based on which VM Tag is assigned. It will only allow 1.

Thanks Sandtitz, that worked!  The key was leaving out the vcenter name in the domain (folder) path. I appreciate the help!
