System restore failed

Hi,I'm in the process of evaluating the Avamar product for deployment with customers. I have an SBS2008 (essentially a x64 Win 2008 machine) which I have succesfull backupped several times. Included in the dataset are:

  • All local Windows filesystems
  • Windows VSS (with Create Disaster Recovery Backup checked, Backup type is Full backup)
  • Exchange messages
  • Exchange database
  • SQL
  • All Sharepoint VSS Data

I've downloaded and burned the avamar WinPe cd which is supposed to be used for system recovery. I've loaded the drivers and my nic and storage are propperly working. I can select a backup from a series of backups, however upon starting the restore I am confronted with the next error:

Error retrieving the list of critical volume results
Restore results file not found: x:\program files\avs\var\volume-completion-status.xml
After this error the restore stops. I have this issue with all available backups.

Hello,

Please ensure that the requirements specified for Disaster recovery in the Avamar for windows servers guide(http://powerlink.emc.com/km/live1//en_US/Offering_Technical/Technical_Documentation/300-011-627.pdf) are met.

The new target machine must be the same make, model, and hardware configuration as the original machine. The Microsoft Support article “How to move a Windows installation to different hardware” http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249694 states “Microsoft does not support restoring a system state backup from one computer to a second computer of a different make, model, or hardware configuration.”

Disaster recovery will fail to initialize and format the disk when the restore system’s disk size is less than the initial backup system disk size, even though the restore system’s disk size is sufficient for the disaster recovery backup data.

All target disks on the restore system need to be as large as the original disks.

Also note that SBS is not officially supported with Avamar but it may work for you. Please refer this thread for more details :

I had this problem too recovering a win2008 server. We discovered 2 things:

The version 6.1.101-87 CD was required to get it to work, and

the flag --exclude-non-critical-disks=false was needed in the "Summary" section of the recovery wizard. Use the "Options" button, and add the flag under "Additional Options"

Hope this helps...

Did you ever get a resolution to this issue? We have upgraded to Avamar 7.5.1 and doing restores we are getting same issue/error." Error retrieving critical volume results ...."

Any help/pointer would be appreciated
