Where are my backups stored
Hi
I have an Avamar with Datadomain deployment. At some point a backup was done and was stored on the Avamar storage instead of DD storage. How can I determine what is stored on the Avamar storage so I can clear it off? I have looked around and i cannot find a report to run, and I have even went through the backups individually and looked where they are stored and I found some, but the utilization is still at 57%.
Thanks
Dusty

as to what Adam has said, there are two things to look at.
One is the Metadata, once allocated it is always allocated
but what you are actually using on the Avamar grid may be lower.
on your mail Avamar gui.the window where it shows Capacity
on the Avamar side touch that Blue/Yellow/Green disk image
it will open another window
showing you actual Server Utilization and the Metadata.
Example is my Metadata is 86.7% and that is what the main gui shows me
but when I touch the disk image in the gui it show I am only using 46.5% of the 65% I am allowed to use of disk.

Open an Avamar recovery GUI then highlight a valid backup date.
In the display upper right there's a field which indicates where it is stored Avamar or DD

Hi Adam,
I have already looked through all the backups. Several months ago I found some that were storing to the grid, and resolved the issue and delete the backups it did clear up some space, but not all of it.
Thanks

It's a single node used for meta data all storage should be on the Datadomain. I am looking at the dpnsummary report now.

What type of Avamar do you have , a single node used primarily for meta data or a traditional GRID with multiple storage nodes?
I believe a dpnsummary report will show which BU's are consuming GSAN space.

easy if you know the server name
go into Backup and Restore gui
find your server
go to Manage tab
change By Date Range to go back far enough
and retrieve
last column will show Server,
Avamar if it son you the Avamar grid
Some place else if it is the replicated cy
and DD-dd grid name if it is stored on the DataDomain.

Hmm, given it's a meta data node and assuming the backups you deleted consumed a significant amount of GSAN this may cause you some grief.
All data in the GSAN is stored in stripe files and backup data is stored in the largest stripes typically consuming the lions share of the GSAN. The stripe files themselves once established can never be deleted only their content can.
Deleting backups deletes the chunk contents stored inside a data stripe but the stripe files disk allocation can never be recovered. Although you may have some empty data stripe files within the existing data stripes it also implies the space they consume now can only be used for backup data, they cannot be reallocated to be used by new meta data stripes.
Are you short of metadata capacity?

I have already went through all the servers backups, and replications jobs. I am not seeing anything on the Avamar grid. All backups are showing stored on the DD.

I think you might be on to something. The backups that got put there that were deleted were exchange backups (HUGE). The grid is showing 57.4% utilized. I'm not in panic mode, but I sucks see that much used, and I know it's not

Ah that's it!!! Thanks Guys. I didn't realize you could click on that storage and it would tell you how it's allocated. It's all my Metadata.
thanks again both of you!!!!
