Backups, several questions...

Hi guys, I am new to EMC and have a LOT to learn, so please take it easy on me with the acronyms and such!

I have two Celerras that I need to backup at two separate sites and I need assistance on how to get everything configured properly.  At SiteA I have a Dell PowerVault ML6000 Library with 3 LTO3 drives in it.  This is currently connected to a server running Backup Exec 12.5 via direct FC connection.  At SiteB, we have a PowerVault 124T (single drive library) connected to a server running Backup Exec 12.5 via SCSI.

Each site has quite a few other servers that we need to backup, so dedicating the libraries to the Celerras is not going to happen (and new backup equipment is not budgeted for).  I have done a little bit of reading on this and have questions with how I can best set things up.

1.  At SiteA (ML6000), am I able to connect just 1 or 2 of the three LTO3 drives to the Celerra and continue to use Backup Exec to control the library and the remaining drive?  What I mean by this is when a backup of the Celerra kicks off, will BExec instruct the library to insert a tape into the appropriate drive, then instruct the Celerra to start dumping to the attached tape drive?  When the tape runs out of space, would the Celerra notify BExec of this so that a new tape can be loaded?

2.  I have read on one of the Symantec forums that backup exec supports streaming of non-NDMP backup jobs to a NDMP device.  If I understand this correctly, this means that I could do a traditional tape backup of another server to a tape drive attached to the Celerra.  Is that true?  If yes, then are there any shortcomings to this solution?

3.  At SiteB since we only have a single-drive SCSI-based backup library we obviously cannot connect this to the Celerra for NDMP backups.  As a result, I am attempting to do file-based backups of the data on this Celerra, but I am unable to get Backup Exec to authenticate with the Celerra no matter what I do.  I have several CIFS shares setup, all of which my domain backup account has access to, but I get an access denied everytime I attempt to access the CIFS servers from Backup Exec.  Why would that be?

That's it for now.  Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi Carlos,

For number 3 I think you need to change the NDMP port http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/255174.htm

I know you are probably thinking but I am not using NDMP for this, but there is a conflict in ports that prevents access.

1) You will need to setup a user account on Celerra that will be used by Backup Exec to communicate to Celerra. Backup exec server needs to be able to talk to one of the network interfaces on datamover to tell it when to start writing data ..etc

2) hmm ..can you provide that link ? It's not 3-way NDMP is it ?

3) try to add your account to "Backup operator" group on the CIFS server.

Hi guys, ok, I got #3 sorted out.  alias pointed me in the right direction.  I didn't want to change the remote agent port on all my servers, so I just disabled NDMP on that datamover per emc158412:

To continue to use LAN Backup, apply one of these  two workarounds:

  • Disable NDMP on the the Data Mover by removing the following line from the /nas/server/slot_x/netd file:

    ndmp port=10000

To activate the change, reboot that Data Mover.
  • Change the port number for the LAN backup communications between Backup Exec 11d Media Server and Backup Exec Agents on remote systems to some port other than 10000.  Refer to this URL for directions on how resolve this conflict:  http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/255174.htm .

As for my other two questions, can someone please provide input on this?  I have already created the ndmp user account on the Celerra at SiteA and have BackupExec setup to see the NDMP server.  I just need some guidance on whether or not I am understanding things correctly as I stated them in #1.

As for my question #2 (non-NDMP backups to an NDMP-attched-device), all I have is a forum post saying that was possible, not a link directly from Symantec.  I take this to mean that I can select the tape drive attached to the celerra for use in backing up other servers?  Is that really possible?  It would certainly be nice if I didn't have to dedicate one or two tape drives solely for use on the Celerra and lose the ability to use those drives to backup other devices on my network.

Thanks again.

Update:  I have the drive attached to the Celerra and Backup Exec sees it there.  I found another post on this forum stating that NDMP supports the library being controlled by another server, so it sounds like I should be ok with directly attaching a tape drive from my library to the Celerra.

I am about to run a backup of the data we have in place now.  Once that is done I will test out the non-NDMP backup to NDMP-attached drive that I was describing above and post back with my results.

Allright, everything works!

I ended up having to partition the ML6000 (Scalar i500) in order to facilitate robot management with backup exec.  I setup the new VTL so that it is controlled via the tape drive I have attached to the AUX0 port on my Celerra.  Backup Exec is configured to see the Celerra via NDMP and identified the tape drive and slots attached to the Celerra just fine.  BExec also handles the media management so that tapes are inserted as needed while the job is running.  I ran a test backup which ran at 3100MB/min.  How does this compare to speeds you guys are seeing?

I also tested the non-NDMP backup to NDMP-attached tape drive and this works as well!  The new virtual tape library shows up under the "Shared Storage" heading in the "Device" drop down on the "Device and Media" page when you are setting up a new job in Backup Exec.  I was able to backup another Windows 2003 server using the tape drive attached to the Celerra at 1600MB/min.  This is not much of a loss in performance for us versus backing up directly to the drives attached to our Backup Exec server.  It is also great news since we do not lose the ability to use the tape drives we attach to the Celerra for other backup jobs.  Here's a screenshot of the setup in Backup Exec.

I also did some digging around on the Symantec knowledge base and found an article that describes the 3 different 3-way NDMP scenarios possible within Backup Exec.  They are pictured below (the 3rd one is the scenario I successfully tested today).  More info can be found at http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/326477.htm.  The article mentions that the 3rd scenario is not possible with Backup Exec for Windows, but it worked fine for me on Backup Exec 12.5 for Windows.

1.  NDMP Filer to library attached to Backup Exec Media Server.

(Backup Exec acts as an NDMP Tape Server in this scenario)

2.  Standard 3-Way NDMP backup.

3.  Backup Windows server to library attached to NDMP Filer.
