Multiple CIFS shares migration to new Celerra

Hello EMC and All,

I have to deal with migrating a filesystem from an old to a new EMC Celerra NAS NS960.

The filesystem on the old nas contains over 350 hidden shares.

I am basically creating filesystem with the same size on the new NAS. Then re-creating all those 350 hidden shares, and then sharing those 350 shares through a CIFS server, joined in the domain.

I am using Robocopy/Emcopy to copy the data from the old nas to the new nas, and then ACL permissions aswell, since the customer does not have money to buy Celerra Replicator license.

Could you, please, tell me a way to copy those 350 hidden shares at once in a way that the New nas gonna recognize them as shares?

I am basically bring up CIFS server on the new nas, creating FS, recreating all the cifs shares then copy all the data from the old nas to the new nas. Then I bring down the CIFS server on the old nas, recreate the CIFS server on the new NAS with the same name and configure the CIFS sharing to be as on the old nas.

Any advices, tricks to do this easier will be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

in 2 weeks I have to do nearly the same, I have to move the CIFS Shares, data and ACls from existing Windows File Servers to a new NS480.

I never did this before and most of the people I asked told me to use first richcopy (faster) to copy the data part, after that I should use emcopy for incrementel copys and the adjustment of the ACLs.

Are there any other/better tools to do such a migration?

My basic plan is:

1. Create a CIFS Server and 1 or more shares on the NS480, same like on the windows file servers

2. Mount the Shares to a Windows server where all existing shares are mounted too

3. Copy files and ACLs as mentioned before with richcopy and emcopy

4. after complete copy unmount the existing windows shares and activate the new shares for the hosts by adding the IPs of the windows file servers to the new NS480 cifs server. (a short downtime of the nas services required)

Can I do the migration this way?

use emcopy for everything, it's multi-threaded ..very fast. This is how i've done it the past:

1) create a CIFS server with temporary name/ip and join it to AD

2) present file system from Celerra to Windows file server and start copying data, keep copying data from time to time to keep it close to source

3) on the cut-over data, disconnect all users and run emcopy one more time

4) shutdown windows server, assign its ip to Celerra.

5) unjoin temp CIFS server from AD, change its name using this procedure emc156835 , during this process you will assign the ip address that used to belong to windows file server.

6) use sharedupe utility to set share permissions if necessary

Hello,

do someone have an idea of I can mount a share to 3 different CIFS servers on the Celerra using sharedup?

The mount shoudl look like this:

share cifs_server1,cifs_server2,cifs_server3, means that alle 3 cifs server are in one entry on the Celerra.

When I load my dump file for each cifs server as targetI get 3 entry looking like that:

share cifs_server1

share cifs_server2

share cifs_server3

Everything works fine with this, but as we have about 300 Shares it would be great to each share only one time as entry in the GUI. Just only a optical issue.
