Backup mirrored (mirrorview) LUN with NDMP capable backup
Hi all, I'm new into EMC storage and I hope you can help me. A customer has a setup with a Celerra NS-120 on two locations each. The lun's are replicated with Mirroview (sync) from one datacenter to the other. We want to backup the replicated LUN on one location with Symantec Backup Exec with the NDMP option. Because the NS-120 supports NDMP version 4, Backup Exec with NDMP option should be able to backup the NS-120. But I want to be sure that the replicated LUN can be selected. This way, we can use the already optimized replication between the two NS-120 and backup the data in the other datacenter. I know this is a generic question, but when we know this setup can work we start a project to work out the details. Thanks in advance for your advice in this, regards, Cees

You can not do your backup from the datacenter which is the destination of the mirrorview luns.
If you want to do your backup on the destination, use IP-Replication between the two sites.

Thanks Peter, I've checked the datasheet about the Celerra IP Replicator. This should be the solution if the LUN's contains files like on a fileserver. But the LUN's hold the VMFS drives of an ESX farm. And to backup these files you need a backup agent for ESX. So, will that work when you use the IP Replicator? I want to make sure I can use the replication possibilities of the storage solution to get the data in one datacenter, and then start from the replicated LUN's. But with the possibility to recover the ESX servers from Backup Exec. And do I still need the NDMP solution also then? Thanks again! Regards, Cees

I would suggest to talk to your local EMC or partner technical consultant for a complete discussion around the pro’s and con’s of using sync vx. Async and the backup solutions possible.
If you wanted to use Replicator you would have to use NFS data stores and not FC/ISCSI SAN connection to the vmware server
