Snapshot missing files

We are using a Celerra NX4. We use Checkpoints for users home directories allowing them to recover deleted files/folders if needed. We have a situation where one user has many files within their folder and they deleted that folder. When using the "Previous Versions" tab under miccrosoft to restore the files within the folder there are NO files to restore. Its like the checkpoints never actually took the snapshot of the files for that particular folder (other folders work fine). Is their anything that would cause a checkpoint to NOT take a snapshot of the files within a folder? The files have been their for months so they have for sure been there long enough for the checkpoints to get them. Is their a security permission or anything that would of keep the Checkpoint from taking a snpashot of these files?

As a side note if it matters we run Deduplication on this volume if that would casue any issue with it.

Thanks for any help.

Just use the hidden .ckpt folder instead of the Previous Versions tab

Go one level up in the directory tree ..look at checkpoints from that perspective.

All the the Checkpoints say they are active.

I have tried this and still nothing...the folder that i need to restore the files from is empty at all levels. So far it only seems to be this person's folder that is having the problem and noone else (at least that we can tell at the moment). I know there were files in it cause i can look at the folder in the tape backups and all the files are present...so its just like they are missing from the snapshots.

Strange …if you run “fs_ckpt  fsname -l”  ..all snapshot are active ? (none say “INACTIVE”)

Are you sure the SnapSureVSS setting is enabled?

[nasadmin@NS80-CS0 ~]$ server_param server_2 -facility cifs -info allowSnapSureVss
server_2 :
name                    = allowSnapSureVss
facility_name           = cifs
default_value           = 1
current_value           = 1
configured_value        =
user_action             = none
change_effective        = immediate
range                   = (0,1)
description             = Enables SCSF checkpoint access for CIFS

It's on by default, but something could have turned it off, by some chance.  However, if it's turned off, that might explain why you can't see anything from Previous Versions.  Still, it sounds odd that no files are there.

Thanks!

Karl

due to the way checkpoints work (block-level) its simply not possible for some deleted/changed files to be missing while others are there (for the same fs and ckpt)

if the checkpoint is active then the data is there

whats possible:

- the deletion was done before the last remaining active checkpoint

- some Microsoft SCSF client problem to not display them

- a corrupt checkpoint (but then you would have seen other problems)

- the whole directory was deleted and recreated with the same name - then you simply need to look one layer up from the deleted directory

I would suggest you search for these file using the hidden .ckpt directory or export it via an extra temp share

to rule out an access view problem (ABE) you could also look at them using NFS or ftp

deduplication is transparent and wouldnt cause this

Hi,

What's your NAS code version ?

Primus emc234407 "Previous Versions tab on Windows client does not display files to restore when parent folder has been deleted." might apply to this case.

There is already a fix for that.

Ha!  That's almost as good as the time I set an out-of-office on a postmaster account!

I am using 5.6.47-11

I have looked at every level in all the snapshots and this folder is still missing the files. It is very odd, especially since the files were there in the tape backups so i know they had more than enough  time to be in a snapshot. We keep the checkpoints for 3 weeks but yet no files are in the folders. I havent seen this on anyone elses folders yet. This makes me wonder about ho many other checkpoints may not be correctly working.

I have tried the previous Tab button from several different machines and as different users. This is the only place where i see the files missing.

Could that folder have hidden attributes, is windows explorer set to display hidden files and folder ? Just taking a shot in the dark.

How exactly do i use the .ckpt folder? I have only ever used the "previous versions" tab.

Thanks for the help.

in your address bar add ".ckpt"

for example:

K:\marketing\.ckpt
