Adding DAE2 to CX300, changing enclosure addresses?

Hi,

We currently have a CX300 array and are in the process of adding two further DAE2 enclosures to increase capacity. When connecting the additional DAE2 enclosures a warning is shown in the SP event logs. The error is 0x851 stating that the enclosure address is invalid but it does have an address of 2 which is the next in the series.

Could this be to do with the second shelf being an ATA shelf? the config is currently: DAE2P (0)-> DAE-ATA(1) -> DAE2(2) -> DAE2(3)

Do the enclosures need to be all fibre then the ATA shelf?

If this is the case is it possible to change the enclosure address without losing any data e.g. could I move the ATA shelf to be snclosure 3 and put it as the last shelf?

Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Stuart

its not possible to move enclosures without loosing data (unless you backup data, destroy luns and raid groups, move enclosures, recreate rg/luns and restore data)

check this primus emc127865 about adding enclosures

ATA array in between will not matter.
DAE2P (0)-> DAE-ATA(1) -> DAE2(2) -> DAE2(3)

are you trying to add on top of this or DAE2(2) is the one you are trying to add?

if you are trying to add then it wont work...but if this is the complete setup including the new dae, have you rebooted the array?

DPE2 or DAE2 drives read their FC-AL physical address only at
powerup or when the drive is reset. To avoid losing access to data,
you must set the EA in those enclosures when power is off; you
cannot change the EA while power is on.
Set and read the EA for DAE2P enclosures when power is on.

Thanks for the info about moving enclosures, won't be trying that in a hurry!

The setup below is the complete setup, DAE2(2) and DAE2(3) are the new enclosures that we're trying to add. Being able to have the ATA shelf in between is a big weight off my mind as doing a backup and restore would take ages!

All of the enclosure addresses were set before power on so should be valid but I haven't tried rebooting the array yet, that's probbaly the next thing to do but will need to be scheduled in, I'll let you know the result, thanks for the help so far, much appreciated!

Cheers,

Stuart

Event Code:0x851
Description:Invalid Encl Addr - Shunted
Event Code:0x793
Description:Enclosure , Cabling is correct to BE Loop.

not sure what emc means by shunted enclosure. i checked one primus but it is not applicable to your setup (user had SWAPPED ATA and FC enclosure) - check primus emc141433

there is another primus but i was not able to open it. i believe its accessible to emc guys (emc141770)

can you do one thing during your next change window?
remove all drives from the new enclosures and add them one by one.
also turn the enclosure address knob once and set them to same address to check if they are physically not set correctly.

navisphere itself says cabling is ok but just to make sure check that again...

All of the enclosure addresses were set before power on

then i guess you followed correct procedure...

cany you post exact event long entry and few related events prior to the event and also after that

I'm guessing that you may be coming to the same conclusion as me on this that we need a software enabler to allow access to more than 30 drives. After a lot of head scratiching our supplier has suggested that this may be the case. I must say the documentation around this seems to be slim to zero any one else come across this!
