AX4 maximums and question about UPS support

Hello, I believe I've found the answer to the number of iSCSI devices.

See page 5 here:

1) For an AX4-5SCi, you can connect a maximum of 10 initiators to
an SP, and a maximum of 10 servers to the storage system.
2) For an AX4-5i without an expansion pack installed, you can
connect a maximum 10 initiators to an SP, and a maximum of 10
servers to the storage system.
3) For an AX4-5i with an expansion pack installed, you can connect a
maximum of 64 initiators to an SP and a maximum of 64 servers
to the storage system.

Also, never forget to have a look to www.emc.com/ax4support where you will find almost everything you need to know on AX4.

I don't believe AX4 can be remotely shut down via SNMP, but I'm not quite sure. I believe you will need to shut it down via its web user interface.

I am intending to do this, but have not yet fully looked into it.

My UPS are APC and the servers have an option to run a script before shutdown (its intended to stop programs like oracle before the server shuts down). I was hoping that I could use this scripting feature to "CLI" into the AX4 and do a shutdown.

I have no experince of CLI, so perhaps it can not be scripted. Tell you what .... could you find out for me

There is a naviseccli command called "shutdown" - please see the Navisphere CLI User Manual, Chapter 3 Basic Commands

Shuts down and powers off the storage system

Description
The naviseccli or navicli shutdown command shuts down and powers off the storage system you specify.

Syntax shutdown is used with naviseccli (described on page 37) or navicli
(described on page 45) as follows:

shutdown [-o]

Prerequisites
For naviseccli, you must have a user account on the storage system on which you want to execute the command. For navicli, you must have a user entry in the Navisphere agent configuration file.

Options -o

Executes the command without prompting for confirmation.

Output

None if the command succeeds; status or error information if it fails.

Example naviseccli -h ss1_spa shutdown

This command shuts down and powers off the specified storage system.

Note: To use this command with navicli, replace naviseccli with navicli.
Before you shutdown the storage system, stop all I/O from
any servers connected to the storage system and save all
unsaved data to disk. During the shutdown process you
will lose access to all data on the LUNs but you will not
lose any data. When you power up the storage system you
will regain access to the LUNs.
Do you want to shutdown and power off the subsystem now
(y/n)?

i would also recommend to do this auto shutdown of array after the connected hosts are stopped(no RW) first. I am note sure how you would be able to make sure of this part or the related hosts starts hanging!!

I hit upon this problem successfully created a script to shut it down (a one line batch script), but as soon as I shutdown the ax4 unit, the windows servers hung, which is not a good idea if you want a shutdown in an emergency situation
(this was all done in a test environment)

I have a print server that has no iscsi drives, so I had planned to use this server to shut down the ax4 unit.

So the iscsi "clients" will shut themselves down, followed by the ax4 units courtesy of the print server.
